A Woman Coughed On A One-Year-Old Baby After A Confrontation With A Latina Who Says It Was Racially Motivated
San Jose police are looking to the public for help in finding a woman who assaulted an infant during a verbal altercation with the baby’s mother.
The incident occurred on June 12 at a Yogurtland.
In surveillance video taken at the frozen yogurt spot, the women were standing beside each other in line.
Mireya Mora told ABC 7 News she was with her abuela and son at the Yorgutland speaking Spanish when the assailant began to harass her. “Me and my grandma are Hispanic and she started telling me about my distance and harassing me and my son once I started speaking Spanish to my grandma,” Mora told the outlet.
According to the San Jose Police Department, “The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect was upset the female was not maintaining proper social distancing, so the suspect removed her face mask, got close to the baby’s face, and coughed 2-3 times. The suspect left the scene and has not been identified or apprehended.”
As of today, the 1-year-old boy is healthy and has not tested positive for coronavirus.
The assailant is described as a white woman in her 60s.
According to the San Jose press release, the suspect is of a medium build and wore a gray bandana, glasses, and patterned tennis shoes.
Mora said in her interview that she is hoping to see the woman apprehended and charged. “She did it on purpose,” Mora said in her interview. “It’s not like she did it on accident. It happened so quick I was in shock. She got close, she took off her mask, and she coughed three times, super hard, on my son’s face. If he were to get sick, it’s just, I can’t even imagine.”
The San Jose Police Department’s Assaults is requesting anyone with information to contact Detective Dan Bowman at 408-277-4161.
