Latina Actresses Are Pivoting to Directing and Producing In Order to Get More Latinx Stories Told

The numbers are bleak. Latinos make up 18% of America’s population but only 5% of the number of speaking roles in movies in 2019 according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.

Hollywood seems to be late to the party when it comes to Latino representation onscreen. But luckily, there are a handful of Latino artists and creators out there who are taking the fight to appear in front of the screen to behind the camera.

Take, for example, Eva Longoria, who was just announced to be directing and co-starring in the new action-comedy film, “Spa Day”

This marks the third movie the Mexican-American actress will be helming and the first Latina to ever direct more than one major studio film.

The other films on Longoria’s roster include a vehicle for her and Kerry Washington tentatively titled “24/7”, as well as the upcoming biopic “Flamin’ Hot”–a movie centered around Richard Montañez, the man who invented Flaming Hot Cheetos.

Longoria has been candid about how the decision to move into directing and producing has been a strategic one.

“One of the reasons I went into producing and directing was I wasn’t going to sit back and wait for somebody to create a role I wanted to do,” Longoria told Variety in 2018.

“You can’t just sit around waiting for [good projects], and I wanted to create that — not just for myself but for other Latinas.”

But her career transition isn’t unique as a Latina in Hollywood. She has joined the ranks of other Latinas in Hollywood who have began to produce and direct their own projects in order to finally see Latino stories told on screen.

Her peers include Jennifer Lopez (“Shades of Blue“, “Hustlers“), Selena Gomez (“Living Undocumented“), America Ferrera (“Gentefied“, “Superstore“), Gina Rodriguez (“Diary of an American President,” “Carmen San Diego“), and Salma Hayek (“Ugly Betty”).

All of these women have thrown their weight behind projects that otherwise wouldn’t be made if their names weren’t attached to them.

All of these women are creating stories that feature Latino stories and Latino talent–in front of and behind the camera.

America Ferrera explained the reason behind her conscious career pivot from acting to directing/producing: “My genuine heart’s desire is to tell stories that haven’t been told,” she told CBS This Morning. “It’s hard to get stories about people like us made. And then to get those stories told by us is very very uncommon.”

Although the endgame is to have Latinx stories greenlit without having to first be a famous singer or actress, the work these ladies are doing might be laying the foundation for an easier road for future industry players of Latino descent. Or as Longoria so eloquently put it: “If we unite and create opportunities for each other and pull each other up, there could be a lot more success for representation on TV.”

Um Hi, Armie Hammer Dropped Out Of A JLO Movie After Leaked Texts Claimed He’s Into Being A Cannibal And Is 2021 Over Yet?

Yes, welcome to 2021. A year whose heels only just hit the ground when Republican extremists terrorized the Capitol building leading to Donald Trump’s impeachment… And oh yeah saw actor Armie Hammer being accused of liking cannibalism. Yes, we said it cannibalism, ya know, an appetite for eating your own kind?

Gossip surrounding the Call Me By Your Name actor and his sex life has become so salacious that the actor announced that he was stepping back from an upcoming movie with Jennifer Lopez.

Armie Hammer announced this week that he will no longer star in the upcoming movie, Shotgun Wedding alongside Jennifer Lopez.

The brewing scandal involving Hammer includes alleged leaked messages related to his sex life.

The leaked messages alleged that Hammer has a thing for fantasies related to rape and cannibalism and was leaked by an anonymous social media account user with the name House of Effie. According to the account, Hammer told a woman that he was “100 percent a cannibal.” Another message suggested that Hammer liked the taste of blood.

“I’m not responding to these bulls–t claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for four months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic,” Hammer said in a statement to Page Six. “Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that.”

Still, the show will go on for Lopez who will star in the film being directed by “Pitch Perfect” director Jason Moore.

The film will be distributed in the US by Lionsgate and will stream internationally on Amazon Prime. According to Deadline, Shotgun Wedding was meant to see Lopez and Hammer “play a couple who gather their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding just as they begin to get cold feet about their relationship. If that wasn’t enough of a threat to the celebration, suddenly everyone’s lives are in danger when the entire party is taken, hostage.”

Despite the unconfirmed gossip around him, Hammer still has upcoming projects. These include the thriller, “The Billion Dollar Spy,” and a sequel to the 2017 hit “Call Me By Your Name” in which he played Oliver, a handsome doctoral student.

Its not the first time gossip around Hammer’s love life has caused a stir. In a 2013, Playboy interview Hammer described himself as a “dominant lover” and enjoyed “grabbing women by the neck and hair.”

He later told E! News of the candid Playboy interview, “Don’t drink during an interview.”

Just about anyone with a pulse and a heart for makeup knows that Jennifer Lopez established herself as a beauty guru ages ago.

The actress, singer, and business entrepreneur has been an influential part of the beauty industry throughout her decades-long career. Having established dozens of fragrances (the worth sum of which clocks in at a cool a $2 billion), collaborated on a hit makeup line with Inglot and likely inspired hundreds of thousands of women to invest in countless bronzers, there’s no denying that Jennifer Lopez was a beauty influencer long before social media became a thing.

Soon after ringing in the new year, Lopez took to Instagram to show fans how she uses her newly-launched JLo Beauty skincare to clean up.

Lopez told fans she was going to “wash away 2020” to share how effective her products worked. “It’s a lot of makeup and I’m ready to wash it off,” she explained before dampening her face and showing how her products like That Hit Single In a Gel Cream CleanserThat JLo Glow Multitasking Serum, and That Blockbuster In a Nonstop Wonder Cream.

After washing up, Lopez dried up with a towel and held it up to show that she had no makeup left. “My skin is completely clean. Every one of our products leaves you with a little bit of a glow when you’re done. All the makeup is gone. You can see a little bit of the redness that I have naturally. A little bit of what I have under my eyes,” she revealed.

JLo Beauty’s collection of glow-boosting products include a Gel Cream Cleanser ($38), Multitasking Serum ($79), Multitasking Mask ($18), Nonstop Wonder Cream ($58), Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Moisturizer ($54), Eye Cream ($48), Complexion Booster ($39) and Skin-Nutritious Dietary Supplement ($36).

Fans have waited for nearly two years for Lopez’s new skin-care line to drop.

Sunset glow… #JLoBeauty coming soon

A post shared by Jennifer Lopez (@jlo) on

The “Hustlers” actress announced in December 2018, that she had been working on her own skin-care collection for quite some time. After years of holding our breath for the launch, it looks like we’ll only have to wait just a smidge longer.

In a post to her Instagram page, Lopez dropped the news that J.Lo Beauty is coming soon. In the post, the actress shared two selfies, both of which featured that infamous J.Lo glow, and topped off the look with a caption that teased “Sunset glow… #JLoBeauty coming soon.”

Fans on Instagram poured over the picture and expressed their excitement in the comments section. “Make-up line???” one fan commented. “Skin care products???? YESSSS YESS TO EVERYTHING JEN!!”

“Coming soon?! Need that glow!! Looking gorgeous mama,” another chimed in.

Sadly, Lopez did refrain from sharing the launch date of the products and has yet to reveal what to expect out of the new line.

Which isn’t so surprising since Lopez is the queen of teasers.

Earlier this month, Lopez hinted that she had something in the works related to her beauty brand when she posted a makeup-free video and challenged fans to guess what she was working on. “Woke up this morning feeling extra grateful and excited! 🤍 Want to know why? Comment below if you wanna know what I’m working on,” she wrote.

However, we might just have one hint! According to People a trademark filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office last December, JLo Beauty aims to provide cosmetics and skincare products.
