Seventeen-year-old Brandon Hendricks had a bright future ahead of him. The star of his high school basketball team was headed to Saint John’s University in the fall but his prospects were brought to a sad end this past Saturday when he was shot and killed.

Hendricks was fatally shot in the neck just days after his graduation from James Monroe High School.

New York City police responded to a shooting in the Bronx early Sunday morning. When they arrived to the scene they found Hendricks suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Soon after, Hendricks was rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital. In a statement issued by NYPD, it was revealed that he came succame to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

According to CBS2, Hendricks was killed after an argument broke out at a barbecue.

Just last week, Hendricks graduated from school.

His death comes as a shock to teachers and family.

James Monroe High School’s team’s head coach Nigel Thompson wrote in an Instagram about his student’s death. “[Brandon] was a charismatic, humble young man. He listened and respected everyone,” he wrote. “He was an awesome teammate. Thoughtful, kind, and caring. Full of life and positivity. I’ve never met anyone who had anything bad to say about him.”

In his post, Thompson recalled how his student was more than just a lover of basketball. He excelled in academics as well. “Some of my fondest memories of Brandon was not on the court but in my Geometry class. Brandon was so inquisitive and intelligent. His questions, thoughtfulness and summaries always moved the class forward,” Thompson wrote. “He would bounce around the class helping his classmate until they got it. His effort in class was equal to his effort on the court…why was he taken away so soon?”

According to a statement issued by a senior police official to NBC New York, Hendricks has no police records and never had any run-ins with them.

Hendrick’s death is part of an ongoing investigation and no arrests have been made.
