Nicky Jam Is Backpedaling Again—This Time, He’s Making His Trump Moment Sound Cute
Nicky Jam faced much backlash when he endorsed President Donald Trump for the 2024 election. He was mercilessly trolled when he bounded eagerly on the stage at a rally when President Trump misgendered him. The backlash and trolling forced the Puerto Rican star to rescind his endorsement after the infamous Madison Square Garden rally that attacked Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans.
Well, now that President Trump is in power, Nicky Jam seems to be rekindling his admiration for the president. Maybe respect for Puerto Rico and pronouns doesn’t matter as much now.
Nicky Jam is romanticizing his moment in the spotlight with President Donald Trump
We all remember the moment that President Trump called the entertainer on stage and referred to him with female-identifying pronouns. The rally, which must be living rent-free in his head, caused a flurry of social media jokes and memes. He recently recounted the story and is finding the joy and perceived humor in it during an interview with Billboard.
When introducing Nicky Jam to the crowd, President Trump famously said: “Do you know Nicky? She’s hot!”
Despite the misgendering, he seemed to run on stage to saddle up next to President Trump. Now, months later, Nicky Jam is working overtime to change the narrative and give the moment a rose-colored lens.
The singer claims that the president was just confused because he didn’t walk into the room first
The singer told the outlet that he and his wife met President Trump for the first time at the rally. He let his wife go in first to meet the president, and that, Nicky Jam claims, is the confusion. Letting his wife go into the room first made President Trump believe that Nicky Jam’s wife was Nicky Jam.
“Obviously, I let my wife go first, and when he saw her, he said, ‘Wow, she’s beautiful!’” he told Billboard. “It’s flattering to have the president tell my wife that she’s hot. But when I met him, in his mind she was Nicky Jam. So that’s when he said, ‘Latin superstar Nicky Jam, she’s hot.’ I’m sure when I went onstage, he thought, ‘Oh my God.’ Because what does he know about Nicky Jam? He doesn’t listen to reggaetón.”
But, the singer feels good about the moment. As he recalls, President Trump called to apologize for misgendering him.
“Trump called and apologized” for the ‘hot’ comment,” he reminisced. “He said, ‘I never call nobody, but you’re a standup guy.’”
It seems that Nicky Jam walking back his endorsement was less rooted in morality and more rooted in public perception
The singer loudly withdrew his endorsement of President Trump after Tony Hinchcliffe made disparaging comments about Puerto Rico. The comedian compared Puerto Rico to a floating island of garbage. He also talked about how overly sexualized Latino people are and that they need to be kept out.
The singer took a stand on social media, claiming that Puerto Rico deserved respect. Yet, over time, it seems his advocacy of Puerto Rico has softened, and his stories about President Trump are glowing.
