Watch: Gwyneth Paltrow Speaking Spanish, Says Her Favorite Word Is ‘Canela’

If you grew up watching movies like “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Emma,” and “Shakespeare In Love,” and love the “Iron Man” film series, you may just be a Gwyneth Paltrow fan. While the 50-year-old LA-born actress has been in the public eye for decades, there’s still one little-known detail about the star. Paltrow actually speaks impressive Spanish.

As shown in this 2013 interview during the “Iron Man 3” press junket, Paltrow is fluent in Spanish. In the interview, the actress explains that she studied the language in high school in New York. However, she perfected her Spanish by traveling to Spain as an exchange student at 15 years old.

Paltrow described living just outside of Toledo with a host family, and absolutely “loving” the experience as a teen. She said she “loves Spain,” and also adores “Latino culture,” often traveling to Mexico to this day. She said, “I love the [Spanish] language.”

The “Iron Man” actress continuously practices her Spanish with a friend named Rosario, who is from Palma de Mallorca. Paltrow also hired a nanny from Spain to teach her kids Spanish, which she believes is “very important.” As she puts it, they “always speak Spanish” at home.

She also spoke about the impact of knowing several languages: “A friend who knows five languages always says, ‘One language, one life,’ and I think that’s true. When you speak more than one language… it’s a profound experience.”

The Q&A is a must-watch, with the actress saying her favorite dish is paella, and loves “palabrotas” (bad words in Spanish). That being said, she also loves the words “berenjena” (“eggplant”) and “albahaca” (“basil”) because they’re “so different” in English. She also adores saying “canela.”

Moreover, Paltrow also recently shut down rumors of having beef with fellow actress Scarlett Johansson— in Spanish. Answering an Instagram Q&A in the language, Paltrow said Johansson is “encantadora” and “buena persona.” A bilingual, drama-free queen. We love to see it!
