A San Francisco Karen Called Police On A Homeowner Making A ‘Black Lives Matter’ Sign On His Property
Another day, another Karen.
The world might feel like it’s on pause considering the recent COVID-19 pandemic but Karens are still hard at work. From the tiny crevices of the universe, Karen still has time to pop up out from their masks and voice their complaints and demands for personal white lady justice.
Exhibit A: Lisa Alexander, the CEO of a San Francisco-based skincare company called LaFace Skincare and her recent interaction with a gay Filipino man in San Francisco.
James Juanillo was minding his own business while stenciling a Black Lives Matter sign in front of his home when a Karen popped out from the pushes.
“A white couple call the police on me, a person of color, for stenciling a #BLM chalk message on my own front retaining wall. “Karen” lies and says she knows that I don’t live in my own house, because she knows the person who lives here,” Juanillo wrote in a tweet of the incident which also featured the video.
In a video currently circling around Twitter the Karen, AKA Lisa Alexander, confronted Juanillo for “defacing private property.” Another man in the video, Lisa Alexander’s husband Robert Larkin has also been identified as another person in the video. In it, Robert can be seen asking “Are you defacing private property? You’re free to express your opinions. Just not on people’s property.” In response, Juanilla asks “So if I did live here and it was my property, this would be absolutely fine?” He continues by asking “And you don’t know if I live here or if this is my property.”
“We actually do know,” Alexander chimed in before claiming to know the homeowner. According to Juanillo’s tweet, he has lived in his home for 18 years and he’s never seen the couple before.
Also, many have noted that he was writing with chalk.
Soon after Juanillo posted the video Alexander and her husband were identified by users and she issued a formal apology.
“I want to apologize directly to Mr. Juanillo,” Alexander told CBS San Francisco on Sunday. “There are not enough words to describe how truly sorry I am for being disrespectful to him last Tuesday when I made the decision to question him about what he was doing in front of his home,” she wrote. “I should have minded my own business. The last 48 hours has taught me that my actions were those of someone who is not aware of the damage caused by being ignorant and naive to racial inequalities. When I watch the video I am shocked and sad that I behaved the way I did. It was disrespectful to Mr. Juanillo and I am deeply sorry for that. I did not realize at the time that my actions were racist and have learned a painful lesson. I am taking a hard look at the meaning behind white privilege and am committed to growing from this experience.”
Alexander also claimed that she wanted to meet with Juanillo in person and “apologize in person and share a dialogue where I can continue to learn and grow and be a better person.”
On Monday it was revealed that Alexander’s husband lost his job over the incident.
Raymond James, the investment banking company Roberts worked for, announced on Twitter that the associate had been fired for his involvement in a confrontation.
“Raymond James has zero tolerance for racism and discrimination of any kind,” the company said in a statement. “An inclusive workplace is fundamental to our culture, one in which people are free to bring their whole selves to their careers, and we expect our associates to conduct themselves appropriately inside and outside the workplace. After an investigation into the circumstances of a video alleging racism by one of our associates, we have concluded that the actions of he and his partner were inconsistent with our values, and the associate is no longer employed by Raymond James.”
Meanwhile, Alexander’s company, LaFace Skincare, has taken down both its website and social media accounts. In a statement over the incident, Birchbox announced in a statement that they had “officially cut ties with LaFace and condemns the actions of Alexander, according to CBS San Francisco. We’ve removed their products from our online show and will not be working with them again in the future.”
