The story of a 12-year-old boy’s selfless act has gone viral after a dog shelter in Mexico shared it online.

On February 13th, Refugio Xollini n the Mexican state of Michoacan received a new puppy to look after. The pitbull came with a note written by a boy name Andrés who expressed his desire to protect the dog after he’d witnessed his father abuse him on various occasions.

Hoping to find a safe space for the dog, Andrés brought him to Refugio Xollin.

“My name is Andrés and I am 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave my dog in your hands, hiding it from my dad because he is thinking about selling him. But he mistreats and kicks him. One day he kicked him so hard that he hurt his tail. I hope you can help and take care of him,” he wrote in the letter.”I left him a stuffed animal so he won’t forget me.”

The Refugio Xollin revealed in their Facebook post that the puppy now named Rene, will be adopted once he recovers. And things are looking up for him too because as soon as the group shared the letter the organization received over 300 requests to adopt the dog.

Don’t forget, if you can’t adopt Rene, there are other dogs too.

According to Refugio Xollin, the group has 120 other dogs that want forever homes. “If everyone opened their heart and their home like this little dog, they would have adopted all our dogs from the shelter,” the rescuers said in a Facebook post.
