Disney Announces New Animated Film ‘Encanto’ Set In Magical Colombia
Fans of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Disney, get ready to be charmed.
That’s right, the creators behind the 2017 film Coco and Hamilton are bringing audiences another whirlwind project of magic and music to the screen.
On Thursday, the Walt Disney Company revealed at a Disney’s Investor Day event a new animated film called Encanto.
The musical feature is scheduled to hit theaters in November 2021 and is set in Colombia. In a post shared to Disney’s Twitter account, it was further revealed that the story includes a magical family that lives in a magical home. The title of the film translates to the Spanish word for “charm.”
Encanto follows the story of a young girl who does not possess the magical abilities that her family has.
According to the film’s logline, the story’s protagonist is part of a family that possesses magical powers but she does not. The name of the film is Spanish for the word “charm” and according to a post shared by Miranda, the actor, and producer has been “working on this for nearly three years.”
“Been working on this for nearly three years. So proud of this music and this story. Can’t wait to share more. Super super super orgulloso,” Miranda posted to Twitter.
According to reports, “Encanto reunites Zootopia directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush, and is co-written and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith.” It comes after a string of successful Disney/ Miranda collaborations including 2019’s Mary Poppins Returns and the 2016 animated feature Moana. Miranda’s song for Moana called “How Far I’ll Go” was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2017 Oscars.
It doesn’t end there though.
Disney’s Investor’s Day also announced two new animated princess series for Disney+.
The two shows are inspired by The Princess and the Frog and Moana and are set to premiere on Disney+ in 2022 and 2023. The Disney+ series Tiana is set to focus on the waitress-turned-princess/restaurant-owner from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog which was set in 1920s New Orleans.
The series Moana according to People, “is based on the 2016 animated feature that sees a teenage island princess learn the truth of her adventure-seeking ancestry, and leverage her newfound knowledge to restore the heart of a goddess and save her people.”
“Both Moana and Tiana will feature original music as the two lead characters continue to explore their respective worlds of the South Pacific and New Orleans,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
