The New England Patriots drafted Colombian football player Christian Gonzalez for the upcoming 2023-2024 NFL season, making him one of the 0.4% Latino players in the league. The 20-year-old cornerback previously played for the Colorado Buffaloes and Oregon Ducks in college.

However, Gonzalez took some time to celebrate the people of Colombia and how he’ll represent them in the NFL.

Christian Gonzalez will represent Colombia on the Patriots

In an interview with Melissa Stark on ESPN, Gonzalez opened his blazer to reveal the colors of the Colombian flag inside. Gonzalez told her he was proud to represent Colombia on the field. “It means everything,” he said. “I put it on for everyone back in Colombia. I love that they’re able to look up to me.”

Gonzalez explained more about why it’s so important for him to play not just for himself but for all of his people. Although Latinos love to watch football, very few of them play professionally, and the newest New England Patriot wants kids everywhere to know it’s still possible.

“They don’t really play football over there, so having little kids know they can do what they want if they set their mind to it,” he said. “I just want to be able to let them know they have somebody to look up to.”

Gonzalez’s father is an athlete too

Gonzalez also spoke about his father, who came to the United States from Colombia to play basketball when he was 18. Now, Gonzalez says he wants to do something similar as an athlete representing South America in the US.

Christian’s father, Hector, played for the University of Texas at El Paso. He then moved back to Colombia to play semiprofessionally in his home country. Christian’s sisters, Melissa and Samantha, also race internationally on behalf of Colombia as NCAA All-American track stars.

Social media is reminding us all that this guy is the real deal

Now that he is playing for the Patriots, fans of Gonzalez’s college career are reminding us of his unbelievable talent. There’s this close-call interception that turns into an awe-inspiring drive.

And another great interception right here:

Long story short, people can’t wait to see him bring his talents to the Patriots.
