Demi Lovato just added a new emotional tattoo to her extensive collection of body ink. Lovato’s tattoo artist, Alessandro Capozzi, revealed the newest addition (which he’s titled “Divine Feminine”) on Christmas Eve via Instagram. According to TMZ, the tattoo took a whopping 8 hours to be completed, with Capozzi starting the design at noon and wrapping up the inking session at 8pm.

On Instagram, Capozzi posted two photos. One of the pictures was a close-up of the lifelike neck tattoo. It shows a fallen female angel, her black wings disintegrating, being carried into the sky by three doves. A glowing light emanates from the woman’s chest as she ascends to the heavens. The second picture shows Capozzi and Lovato sitting together in a tattoo parlor, Capozzi working intently on his creation on Lovato’s back.

According to Capozzi, the tattoo represents Lovato’s resilience throughout life’s many trials.

“The dark wings represent the bad times, their fading away is how she moved forward,” Capozzi revealed through the picture’s captions. “The light from within represents the inner strength necessary for the change and the doves, pulling her up, symbolize the reach of a higher state of consciousness”.

Unfortunately, the “bad times” for Lovato have been a very bleak and painful reality for the successful singer and former child star. Lovato has been candid about her lifelong battles with addiction, body dysmorphia, and bipolar disorder–battles that have largely occurred in the public eye. Not only has Lovato done several stints in rehab and sober houses, she also made headlines when she allegedly assaulted a background dancer while she was under the influence of drugs.

“The more you talk about mental illness, the less of a taboo it becomes,” Lovato told American Way magazine in 2017. “As a pop star, I can say, ‘Hey, I’ve got bipolar disorder — it’s nothing that anyone can be ashamed of.’ ”

But, in 2018, like many addict, Lovato suffered a relapse. On July 24th, 2018, Lovato  was rushed to the hospital after overdosing on an unidentified drug that some outlets identified as heroine (but which Lovato later denied). The health scare came after Lovato admitted via her song “Sober” that she was no longer abstaining from drugs and alcohol. “I’m sorry that I’m here again,” she sang. “I promise I’ll get help / It wasn’t my intention / I’m sorry to myself.”

After her highly publicized overdose, Lovato largely avoided social media, stating “I now need time to focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you all have shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out of this on the other side.”. While initially writing  finally breaking her silence in November 2018 with a picture on Instagram that showed her voting in the 2018 election. She  avoided referencing her overdose directly, instead writing, “I am so grateful to be home in time to vote!”

The “Divine Feminine” tattoo marks Demi Lovato’s 23rd tattoo.

Among Lovato’s other tattoos is the word “free” tatted in cursive black ink on her left pinkie, a lion’s face on her left hand, and lifelike portrait of her grandmother on her left forearm, whom she lovingly refers to as “Memaw”. As for Lovato, she also took to Instagram to sing Capozzi’s praises. “Thank you so much,” she commented on the post. “It’s incredible and you are so extremely talented”.

According to Lovato’s most recent Instagram post, she will still be avoiding the public eye until the New Year. On December 4th, she took to social media to explain her upcoming silence. Next to a solid black Instagram post, Lovato wrote: “The next time you hear from me, I’ll be singing….”. We can’t wait.

As for the Lovatics of Instagram, they were effusive about their queen’s new addition to her tattoo collection.

We all know that Lovato’s fans follow her every move, so it makes sense that they feel invested every time she gets a new tattoo.

This Lovatic had high praise for the tattoo’s meaning:

This tattoo truly does represent all of the hardships Lovato has been through in one simple design.

This person believes that this tattoo has blown all the others out of the water.

Indeed, the tattoo is so detailed and realistic that some people are claiming it’s photoshopped.

This person identified with Demi’s continuing mental health and addictions struggles:

Although it’s a shame that Lovato faces such painful issues in her life, her bravery and honesty throughout her trials is truly an inspiration to those who are also struggling.
