Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Faces Backlash Over Decision To Speak With Reporters Of Color

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been a controversial character in politics since being elected. Her latest decision to only give one-on-one interviews to journalists of color.

Lori Lightfoot is facing backlash after saying she would only grant interviews to journalists of color.

Mayor Lightfoot is two years into her term and announced that she would be giving journalists of color one-on-one interviews to mark the occasion. The move was greeted with joy and appreciation by some journalists, but sparked outrage among others. Some are calling the decision racist because it intentionally freezes out white reporters from interviewing the mayor at the milestone.

Some reporters of color are calling out Mayor Lightfoot for her decision.

“I ran to break up the status quo that was failing so many,” Mayor Lightfoot tweeted. “That isn’t just in City Hall. It’s a shame that in 2021, the City Hall press corps is overwhelmingly White in a city where more than half of the city identifies as Black, Latino, AAPI or Native American.”

She added: “This is exactly why I’m being intentional about prioritizing media requests from POC reporters on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of my inauguration as mayor of this great city.”

There are some who welcomed Mayor Lightfoot’s decision.

Mayor Lightfoot is not the first person to make this kind of announcement. She is intentionally giving journalists of color a chance to get face time with the mayor in one-on-one interviews. The mayor’s decision was meant to be a gift to reporters of color, who are few and far between in the press pool.

“As a person of color, I have throughout my adult life done everything I can to fight for diversity and inclusion in every institution that I have been part of and being Mayor makes me uniquely situated to shine a spotlight on this most important issue,” Mayor Lightfoot said in a statement.
