Sen. Joe Manchin Calls On Senate To Expel Sen. Ted Cruz After Insurrection

Americans won’t soon forget the violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Politicians on both sides of the aisle and American citizens have called for those responsible to be held accountable. That includes Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, who has been blamed for encouraging the insurrection.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., is calling on the Senate to expel Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
Sen. Manchin is a Democrat from West Virginia and holds a lot of power in the newly split Senate. Democrats picked up two Senate seats with Sen. Jon Ossoff and Sen. Raphael Warnock winning runoff elections on Jan. 5. Sen. Manchin is a notoriously moderate Democrat representing a very red state setting him up to be the most important vote in the current Senate. He is the latest politician to call on Sen. Ted Cruz’s expulsion from the Senate after Jan. 6.
“That should be a consideration,” Sen. Manchin said about the 14th Amendment being used to oust the Texas senator. “He understands that. Ted’s a very bright individual, and I get along fine with Ted, but what he did was totally outside of the realm of our responsibilities or our privileges.”
“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof,” reads Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. “But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

Sen. Cruz, along with Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., are facing relentless calls to resign from constituents, colleagues, and political pundits. People are horrified with the attack on the democratic system Jan. 6 and see these two senators are the most culpable. The two Republican senators are even facing these calls from other Republicans.
“Some senators, for political gain, misled supporters about their ability to challenge the election results — some even sent out fundraising emails while insurrectionists stormed the Capitol,” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., tweeted Thursday echoing the claim that Sen. Cruz used the terrifying riot to fundraise. “That stops now — Republicans ought to focus on countering the Democrats’ radical agenda.”

A growing coalition of bipartisan senators and congresspeople are calling for the resignation or expulsion of Sen. Cruz and Sen. Hawley. The calls are being echoed by major newspapers and Americans who witnessed the mob breaching Capitol Hill. Both the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Kansas City Star are calling for Sen. Hawley to resign.
