Toilet paper, Crocs, plants. They told us they were edible but who knew they could actually taste so good?

If you didn’t already feel like you couldn’t trust the screen on your phone, the latest trending Instagram profile might just throw you over the edge. In the past week, users on social media have seen their feeds flooded with videos of ordinary objects (such as Crocs) being sliced in half and revealed to have been cakes the entire time. The deceivingly realistic cakes have been mistaken for chicken thighs, bars of soap, and even heads. As the New York Times put it recently “it’s unsettling to see them cut open to reveal their sweet insides.” Called the Cake Trend, The Cake Slice Trend, and the Is This Another Cake Trend, the slew of videos went viral on July 8 after BuzzFeed Tasty shared a series of videos by bakers such as the Turkish baker, @redrosecake_tubageckil. on its Instagram feed.

The cakes, which have prompted the collective question “What is even REAL anymore??” are fantastically surprising and likely delicious.

Some of the cakes featured come from Natalie Sideserf, the owner of Sideserf Cake Studio from Austin, Texas.

According to The New York Times, Sideser been baking her realistic cakes for years. “I’ve always called them ‘still life cakes,’” she told the Times. “They’re like a still life painting. I try to make them as realistic as possible.” She said she has seen an uptick in orders and just got a request for a hyper-realistic shoe cake this week.

Tuba Geçkil another one of the artists behind the cakes has been in the cake art industry for twelve years.

Geçkil teaches courses on cake making. According to BuzzFeed “At the 2016 IKA Culinary Olympics in Germany, Tuba won four gold medals for her realistic 3D simulating cakes of Angela Merkel, John Lennon, Bob Marley, and Michael Schumacher. This set a record for Turkey.”

The realistic cake trend is now being circulated about the internet and sparking all types of food jokes.

Who knew vegetables could potentially taste so good.
