Trump Admin Just Told 900k Migrants Who Used CBP One to Self-Deport ASAP – Here’s What You Need to Know
The Trump administration is stripping legal status to more than 900,000 migrants. The migrants entered the United States using the CBP One app. The CBP One app was a Biden-era app that allowed migrants to set up appointments and court dates for asylum. The program gave migrants immigration parole for two years to allow them to work legally in the U.S. The sudden announcement is the latest in the federal government’s attempt to curb immigration in the U.S.
More than 900,000 migrants who entered using CBP One are being told to leave despite legal protection
According to CBS News, the CBP One app has been renamed CBP Home. The Trump administration is using the same app to tell migrants that they have to leave. This is also how they were informed that they have lost their protected status.
CBP One was created by the Biden administration to encourage migrants to follow legal avenues to enter the U.S. It also created an easier path for both migrants and the immigration system. At the beginning of his second term, the Trump administration ended the app. The decision created confusion as migrants waited at the U.S./Mexico border to start their process.
“If you do not depart the United States immediately you will be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States — unless you have otherwise obtained a lawful basis to remain here,” reds the message sent by the Department of Homeland Security, according to CBS News.
Granted, the announcement should not affect those who have applied for asylum and have pending court cases. However, the Trump administration has proven that they are willing to defy court orders and the judicial system.
The Department of Homeland Security claims this is in the name of national security
Migrants alerted to the change in policy were told they needed to self-deport or face law enforcement proceedings to be formally removed from the U.S.
This is another step in the Trump administration’s attempt to continue stripping migrants of their protected status. The Trump administration has ordered more than 500,000 Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan migrants to leave by April 24. Additionally, the Trump administration targeted the Venezuelan migrant community directly by attempting to remove their Temporary Protected Status.
“The Biden administration abused the parole authority to allow millions of illegal aliens into the U.S. which further fueled the worst border crisis in U.S. history,” a senior DHS spokesperson said about the announcement according to ABC News.
CBP One expanded the pathway for legal entry for migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. It is unclear how many migrants received the direct email telling them to self-deport using the same app that allowed them into the country to begin with.
“For many people who leave the United States, there may never be a lawful option for return to the United States, or reentry may be barred for many years,” Heidi Altman, the vice president of policy at the National Immigration Law Center told NBC News. Forcing or coercing people into leaving their homes and their loved ones carries political, moral, and economic costs—the administration should be ashamed.”
