If you have ever tried to outrun heartbreak by changing your hair, your city, or your whole identity, GALE’s latest single, “Sería Cool,” might be the song for you.

“I wanted to write a song specifically about this feeling,” she tells CREMA, “trying everything you can to get over this person—like moving to another city, cutting your hair, getting a new tattoo…”

While her upcoming project leans into synth-pop and edgier Spanish-language production, GALE wanted “Sería Cool” to be something more stripped back and vulnerable. “For this one, I wanted it to be simple: a guitar, a six-eight ballad, heartfelt singing, melody, and chorus,” she explains. “From the beginning, I knew it was going to be guitar-driven.” That contrast adds an emotional depth to what’s shaping up to be one of her most sonically diverse eras yet. For those listening to the song, she adds, “It’s very hurtful and dramatic and beautiful. Let’s cry together.”

A Full-Circle Moment With Shakira

1GALE has the talent of writing for numerous well-known and Grammy-winning artists, including Shakira. GALE wrote Shakira’s “Copa Vacia” and “Punteria.” This year, she was able to open Shakira’s stadium tour for Las Mujeres Ya No LLoran in Medellin, Colombia. This was a full circle moment for GALE.

“Me, opening the shows for one of my favorite artists of all time, one of my biggest inspirations since I was a little girl. It was certainly a full circle moment, because we have a really good relationship, and we’ve written together some of her songs,” she says about the experience.

This is a memory GALE will forever hold as she shares about her feelings on stage. “I just let my inner child have a blast; like, it was so much fun. I still watch the videos, and I’m like, that happened.”

Giving Back to the Next Gen of Songwriters

2The Recording Academy recently hosted a GRAMMY Camp for young artists in Miami, and GALE was one of the mentors who participated. Gale shared her experiences as a songwriter, offered advice, and participated in a guest panel moderated by Billboard’s Chief Content Officer, Leila Cobo.

When asked what mentoring felt like, GALE shares, “It’s such an honor because years ago, it used to be me in that spot. Trying to get feedback or mentorship or anything from an artist that I look up to or from someone in the industry.” Mentees asked many questions, and GALE found herself mentioning important tips such as “Follow your gut, have a good lawyer if you can, trust your instincts, and it’s okay to say no, even if you don’t have a Plan B.”

The Album We’ve Been Waiting For

3While “Seria Cool” is a sneak peek at what’s to come from GALE, there is already an album on the way. Rolling Stone has even named this upcoming album “Albums We Can’t Wait to Hear.” CREMA had to get the inside of what we can expect, which is “the perfect mix of nostalgia and heartfelt, and being like feeling heartbroken, but also like feeling very excited and motivated about what’s to come, about the experiences that life wants to bring.” The songs and themes include living life fully with one’s heart, and that anything can happen, “but at least you’re giving it your all.”

Next Stop: Spain

4GALE isn’t slowing down anytime soon. She’s headed to Spain for a festival tour that feels like a dream come true. “This is a dream to me,” she says. “I love Spain. It’s one of my favorite places in the world. The people, the culture, the food. I’m so excited to be there and to share my music.” Fans can expect to hear new music from the upcoming album, including “Sería Cool.” GALE has already collaborated with Spanish artists, such as Ana Mena, on last year’s “La Razón,” and she’s looking forward to deepening those connections. “It’s just beautiful,” she says. “It’s going to be very cool. I just want to have fun, enjoy myself, and connect with everyone from there.”
