WATCH: After Years of Hustle, J.C. Escarra Made the Yankees—and His Mom’s Reaction Says It All
J.C. Escarra has been working toward the Major League of Baseball his whole life, and that dream is finally a reality. After years in the minor leagues, Escarra joins the New York Yankees as a backup catcher. This moment was captured when he received the news, and in an emotional video when he told his mom. After all, Latinos know that you can’t share news with anyone before mom.
J.C. Escarra is going to New York to play in the major leagues
In a video posted by the New York Yankees, Aaron Boone sits down with J.C. Escarra and starts to give him bad news. Fortunately, it was set up to let Escarra know that he was going to be a team member of the New York Yankees.
As Boone says in the video, Escarra has put in the work and become a better catcher over the years. His hard work paid off, and in a moment of pure joy, Escarra learns that he is achieving his dream. The announcement is a life-changing moment for Escarra, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 and released in 2022.
“I had just gotten married and bought an apartment with my wife (Jocelyn),” Escarra told MLB.com. “So now I’ve got a mortgage to pay and a wife to provide for. I had to make money somehow, and no one was going to take away my home from me. I knew I had to make those payments, so I was doing anything it took.”
J.C. Escarra is all of us at that moment. For so many of us, no matter how old we are, nothing makes us more emotional than a conversation with mom to share some good news. Moms usually sacrifice everything to make sure our dreams come true. Escarra’s video is a testament to the strength of the bond between mother and child.
Of course, he called his mom to tell her the good news
Like so many Latino children, J.C. Escarra couldn’t wait to share the news with the woman who stood by him during this journey. In the video, you hear Escarra’s mom answer the phone, and she says she was talking to his abuela. A silence follows after he breaks the news, and you can see him tearing up at his mom’s reaction. Shortly after the silence, you hear Escarra’s mom crying on the phone, celebrating the news.
“We’re going to New York,” Escarra says on the call. Through tears you can see falling from his face, he adds: “The dream came true.”
“I can’t believe it, my love,” you hear Escarra’s mom say.
“We did it,” Escarra said.
“We’re going to New York. This is all so beautiful, my love,” his mother said.
Escarra’s journey to the major leagues was not a direct path. The catcher has juggled multiple jobs to make ends meet. According to People Magazine, Escarra was living paycheck to paycheck, even working as an Uber driver. He was also once a substitute teacher to make money.
In the end, all of the hard work and sacrifice paid off. After years of fighting for his dream, Escarra is living it. We are so excited to see Escarra join the New York Yankees. Congratulations, mijo!
