The Internet Just Rediscovered Viggo Mortensen’s Perfect Spanish, and We Love It
A resurfaced clip of Viggo Mortensen speaking flawless Spanish is making the rounds online, and people are having the exact reaction you would expect: wait, since when did Aragorn sound like that?
The answer, as it turns out, is neither random nor performative. Viggo Mortensen did not pick up Spanish for a role. He grew up with it. Long before he became one of the most recognizable actors in the world, Mortensen was a kid moving through Venezuela and Argentina, absorbing the language as part of daily life and family history.
The story behind Viggo Mortensen’s perfect Spanish
In the resurfaced video, Mortensen explains his background in clear, natural Spanish. In English, his account reads like this: “My father was Danish, from Denmark; he grew up in the countryside and married my mother, who was American and was living and working in New York. A company that owned farms and ranches in Argentina hired him because he had experience in agriculture, and he went there. I was a baby. Well, first we went to Venezuela for a year and then to Argentina, and I stayed there until I was 11.”
According to his biography, Mortensen was born in New York City in 1958 to an American mother and a Danish father. In 1961, the family moved first to Venezuela, then Denmark, and eventually settled in Argentina. They lived in Córdoba, Chaco, and Buenos Aires. His father managed poultry farms and ranches, and Mortensen attended primary school there.
Viggo Mortensen’s connection to Latin America goes way back
What makes Mortensen’s story especially interesting is that his connection to Latin America is longstanding.
He remained in Argentina until he was 11. After his parents divorced in 1969, he and his brothers returned to the United States with their mother, where he spent the rest of his childhood in northern New York. Still, by then, Spanish was already part of him. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish studies and government from St. Lawrence University.

In fact, this is not even the first time Mortensen’s Spanish has caught people’s attention in Latin America.
Back in 2023, while attending the Morelia International Film Festival after filming The Dead Don’t Hurt in Durango, Mexico, Mortensen spoke warmly about the country when asked about the way Mexico is often discussed abroad.
In English, his answer reads: “Well, it’s a country where there is everything, like in all countries, right? But I would not say it is more violent than other places. There are people with great hearts, strong work ethic, and a lot of passion who are very consistent. That is what I experienced during the shoot: a magnificent team effort. We used to say we were a machine, right? And it was very beautiful to see how those who came from outside came together.”
Viggo Mortensen also had a lot to say about filming in Mexico
According to the 2023 coverage from Morelia, Mortensen also spoke specifically about Durango, where The Dead Don’t Hurt was filmed.
He said, “The people of Durango helped us a lot. I don’t know whether global interest in filming in Mexico will change after this movie. For Durango and Mexico, I hope people from outside will come back to shoot again. Mexico has a lot to offer, and Durango, a great deal.”
