Cyntoia Brown’s Story Is Being Told By Netflix
In 2019, we watched closely as the story of Cyntoia Brown caught the attention of celebrities and news outlets across the country. At the time, after spending nearly half of her life in prison, the young 32-year old was released on parole. Brown, who had been serving a life sentence in prison, had been sent to prison at aged 16 after killing a man who allegedly raped her. For this, Brown spent 15 years in the Tennessee Prison for Women. On August 7, 2019, she was released.
Now, Brown’s experience will air on Netflix as part of a new documentary called Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story.
The new documentary dives into Brown’s prison sentence and release. At the time of her sentence, Brown was 16 years old and accused of murdering Johnny Michael Allen in self-defense. Allen had been an adult who solicited her, a minor, for sex at a time in which she was working as a prostitute. Brown’s early release came at the hands of the viral 2019 hashtag, #FreeCyntoiaBrown which had been supported by celebrities like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian.
‘Murder to Mercy’ follows Brown’s life from sex trafficking victim to Freedom.
According to Rolling Stone, “The doc will trace Brown’s life — from running away from home, to suffering sexual and physical abuse, to shooting Allen. The film will also outline her redemption: The support she received from musicians like Rihanna and Lana Del Rey — and her eventual release.”
