There is one undeniable truth about music — and that is that it is a universal language. And seeing Alicia Keys and Angela Aguilar sing in harmony at Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional is the purest testament to that.

The “Fallin'” singer invited Aguilar and a mariachi band to perform a duet that will definitely go down in history.

Although both singers had already revolutionized the stage in Monterrey, the concert in Mexico City seems to have gone viral on social media.

Dressed in a black dress with colorful flowers and wearing a yellow shawl, Aguilar entered the stage upon Keys’ invitation to sing “Looking for Paradise” and “Qué Agonía” to mariachi rhythms. The dialogue between genres and languages, and the artists’ ability to navigate from pop to mariachi and back again, left everyone open-mouthed.

“We just had the most epic night,” Keys replied on Aguilar’s Instagram story.

“It was so good,” Aguilar added.

“Thank you for such a beautiful night. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve lived, thanks to music and thanks to you all. It’s beautiful to connect with people I admire, love, and respect,” Aguilar wrote on Instagram. “I live in the clouds. Thank you for everything.”

Alicia Keys pays tribute to Latin talent on tour

The beautiful moment Alicia Keys and Ángela Aguilar shared on stage is the latest in a string of tributes the American singer has paid to Latino talent during her tour of the continent.

Keys kicked off her tour on May 3 in Rio de Janeiro, where she invited Brazilian singer IZA to the stage to perform her song “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” and IZA’s “Dona de Mim.” Later, in Buenos Aires, the American singer surprised the audience by inviting Cazzu, one of Latin America’s most famous trap singers, to the stage.

“Yesterday this happened to me, that not even my imagination had reached me to dream it,” Cazzu wrote on Instagram. “Alicia Keys, you’re the most beautiful human I have ever met! Thank you.”

The artists sang Cazzu’s “Nada” and Keys’ “Underdog” together.

But perhaps one of the most powerful moments of Keys’ Latin American tour was during her concert in Bogota.

A night of powerful women

On May 11, Bogota’s Movistar Arena shook with girl power when Colombian artist Goyo announced, “Tonight is a night of powerful women.”

The ChocQuibTown singer opened for Keys with songs like “Hasta el techo,” “Pa que se lo gocen,” “Somos Pacifico,” and “Na na na na.”

Moreover, Goyo asked for a round of applause from the audience for the Woman of the Year, Shakira, who was recognized with the award by Billboard. Later, she gave attendees goosebumps when she paid tribute to her fellow countrywoman by singing “Antología.”

Once on stage, Keys invited Karol G to perform “No One.”

Now, in Mexico, Keys has once again demonstrated her respect and admiration for Latin American music.

Her duet with Ángela Aguilar, one of Mexican music’s most important current exponents, weaved a sonic bridge between two countries, two languages, and two musical genres.
