One of the most exciting parts of preparing for a baby is building your registry, but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. In Latino families, that list is rarely just about bebé. It is about preparing your whole support system, from parents and partners to abuelas, tías, and anyone who will step in to help during those first exhausting, beautiful months.

While you might have a clue where to start, what items you’ll truly need, or whether you have enough chupones, we’ve got you. With Huggies® as our ally, we created a registry guide that adapts to your lifestyle and turns every gift into a practical act of amor you’ll actually use. Plus, it’ll help the whole fam step into the fourth trimester with confidence.

Prioritize the essentials for a multi-generational home.

In many Latino households, caregiving is a team effort involving an entire village of abuelas, tías, tíos, and primos to come together and wrap the expectant parents in a circle of love and protection. That means your registry should not just prepare one parent for diaper changes, feedings, and messes. It should help everyone caring for the baby feel ready.

Let’s start with the hospital bag essentials. This is the first thing you must prepare. Take some clothes, compresses, and witch hazel pads for mom. Then, add going-home outfits, receiving blankets, and other baby items that cover your needs for those first few days. Huggies® has created this Hospital Bag Checklist to keep you covered.

If you live on your own and expect family to come over, look for space-saving alternatives to add to your nursery or other space, like daybeds, a small sofa bed, or a chair that turns into a bed. And of course, you also need a glider. The space-saving furniture lets your tías or primas stay over, and the glider lets them rock your baby to sleep while you catch a shower or take a nap.

Similarly, a multi-functioning changing station can be a lifesaver, especially when abuela visits. Add an ergonomic baby bather, baby wipes, diapers, and extra changing clothes that they can reach easily when caring for the baby without breaking their back. You might also want to invest in portable organizers that can be easily transported from one place to another, so you don’t have to run around the house every time the baby needs a change.

Finally, we know your familia won’t let you go without a good meal. Get a large slow cooker or an air fryer that lets others in the house prepare meals in batches without spending hours in the kitchen. As an optional baby shower perk, have all your tias cook and freeze their favorite dishes, and stock up your freezer with meals you just need to thaw.

Create a multi-size diaper registry and plan for the seasons.

You can never register for too many diapers and wipes. Trust us. And by having a diaper stockpile, your family won’t have to guess about the size or type of diaper your baby uses. They can just reach for one from your stockpile.

Register for enough diapers to last you a year. Instead of going for just newborn sizes at first, register for sizes 2 and 3 in bulk. Latino babies are celebrated for growing fast, and they’ll outgrow their newborn phase in no time. Our top choice for newborns is Huggies® Size N (Newborn) diapers. They offer leak protection for up to twelve hours and are made with soft materials to help keep your baby’s skin comfortable.

Take advantage of the registry and stock up on Huggies® Little Snugglers®, featuring all-around blowout protection (sizes 1-2 only). Also, register for Huggies® Little Movers® in sizes 3 and up. They’re designed to help keep your baby comfortable and protected from leaks when they start moving around. This way, your baby will be diaper secure from birth to their first dance moves.

As they grow, Huggies® Little Movers® diapers come in larger sizes and keep them around the house for those emergency moments when you realize your infant is in the middle of a growth spurt.

Your baby will probably be passed around the family, so it’s worth making sure their diaper hold is reliable.

Choose practicality over fancy products.

We get it. Creating a registry can be a fun way to get caught up in buying your baby gadgets, bottles, and other things you probably won’t use. Our top tip is to choose practicality over buying complex items you probably won’t even know how to use. Most of the time, your baby will likely be traveling between houses (to abuelas’, primas’, or tías’), so you’ll want to create practical care kits that will save you time and money.

Multiple sleeping pads for napping or sleeping over can save you money and are a practical, long-lasting tool when the baby doesn’t sleep at the main caregiver’s home. They’re safe, comfy, and easy to store in small spaces.

Register for a second, smaller diaper caddy, specifically to be kept at the main caregiver’s home. Fill it with Huggies® Natural Care® Sensitive Baby Wipes, Huggies® diapers, and some diaper cream. While they may seem like simple items for your registry, they’ll give you and your family peace of mind, and you’ll just need to restock them. Plus, abuela will feel honored to have her very own care kit at her house.

Another great registry addition is a high-capacity diaper bag. Look for one that accommodates long outings and can withstand the full Sunday parrillada. You’ll also want to add Huggies® Extra Large Baby Wipes to your bag to wipe off their little hands after they’ve tried tío’s carne asada.

Opt for items that honor tradition and keep your baby healthy.

Latinos have very specific wellness and bonding practices that must be passed on from generation to generation. One must-have in your registry is a rebozo-style carrier. While modern carriers are great, a ring sling or a long wrap mimics traditional rebozos and keeps your baby close to your heart.

You’ll also want to build your own toiletries bundle for traditional care, with ingredients that keep your baby warm and protect their skin. Get a good coconut or olive oil-based oil for infant massages to prevent empacho and promote good sleep. And remember, soft cotton swaddles can keep your baby well-wrapped during the winter months.

A little something for mami

While most baby showers and registries focus on items the new family member will need, mamá also requires love. Don’t be shy about asking la familia for comfortable pillows, clothes, or even little regalitos to help you feel more relaxed. A nopal nipple balm, a spa day gift card, or even just an at-home massage can make a big difference.

Also, stocking up on postpartum essentials like pads, a large insulated water bottle so you’ll always have cold water at hand, and soft pajamas can make you feel supported. Don’t be shy about asking your family and friends to buy you gift cards for a meal delivery fund or cleaning services to relieve some of the household pressures.

A family affair

As you grow your family, these items are meant to help you build a home with the same foundation of love, language, and tradition your familia gave you. And now, with Huggies® by your side, you’re supported through every moment of this new chapter. As you prepare for your baby shower, take comfort in knowing these essentials are chosen with care and will stay with you long after the celebration.
