Long after her years as an on-screen actress, Audrey Hepburn has been known for her beauty, style, charm, and sophisticated roles in films. She’s also been celebrated and loved for her tireless efforts through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to help children in need.
In the 1950s, Hepburn began her work with UNICEF by first narrating two radio programs for UNICEF and sharing the experiences of children of war. Later, in 1989, she became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and she threw herself into a list of efforts across the globe including Central and South America. She toured countries like Honduras El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, Mexico, and Ecuador.
Oddly, one thing that Hepburn fans don’t know about the actress is that she used her knowledge of various languages to help her work. Throughout her life, Hepburn spoke six languages: Dutch and English from her parents, as well as varying degrees of French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Sweetly she interacts with the people in the area, speaking to the in Spanish with the kindness and affection she was so often known for. “How she spoke to those women in Spanish, the kindness and affection she showed. I’m so impressed. Lovely soul,” one user commented of the clip.
According to accounts, Hepburn pled the case for children in a series of meetings with the chief executives of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. During one trip she spoke about breast-feeding in Spanish. “Soy Audrey Hepburn. Soy Madre. La leche maternal es el major regalo que una madre puede dar a su hijo. Es para toda la vida.”
