Here’s How Nancy Pelosi Has Changed Her Argument About The Dream Act After Protesters Shut Down Her Press Conference
During a recent press conference about the Dream Act, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was interrupted by a heated protest. After speaking to the audience about the importance of the Dream Act and a conversation she had with President Trump, protesters rushed to the stage and drowned out her closing remarks. The protesters were angry that Pelosi was claiming to be working on a “deal” with Trump that involved passing some version of the Dream Act in exchange for an increase in border security.
The point of contention with DACA recipients is that border security increase would target undocumented people who are not eligible for DACA or the Dream Act, according to The Sacramento Bee. Protesters at the press conference held up signs reading “Protect All 11 Million” as they chanted, “Undocumented, Unafraid.”
Since the protest, Pelosi has changed her narrative, saying she believes that a “clean” Dream Act needs to be passed without jeopardizing the rest of the undocumented population, according to The Los Angeles Times. At a follow-up press conference, Pelosi announced the will of the Democrats to pass a “clean” Dream Act that would help to protect families of DACA recipients. Pelosi questioned the soul of the nation if Congress was not willing to step up and take the lead in passing legislation that matches the will of the American people. According to a poll by ORC International and CNN, 60 percent of Americans support a pathway to citizenship for those who are undocumented in the United States. That represents a 14 percent increase from two years prior.
“So, let me just tell you a couple of things. As we fight this fight we recognize that the beauty of the DREAMers is that they speak for their parents,” Pelosi said at the press conference. “They say, ‘Our parents made us who we are, we need to protect them.’ Again, the DREAMers are keeping the American dream alive. Make America dream again. Our DREAMers are doing that.”
