Things You Didn’t Know Your Mamá Wanted For Mother’s Day

If a Latina mom tells you, “Este año no me regales nada…” (Don’t get me anything this year), you better sound the alarms. You know that’s not true. Every Latina mom wants to feel special on Mother’s Day. And if you find yourself in a panic, thinking, “But she said she didn’t want anything!” Calm down. There’s a good chance she’s already told you what she wanted…you just missed her hints. Let’s be real: most Latina moms speak in code. Their ability to hint at what they want without actually saying what they want is like a superpower. But don’t worry – we’re here to help you decipher the hints for you, and make sure your mom has the best Mother’s Day ever.

1. An updated photo album.

Photos of your family mean so much to your mom. She won’t let anyone throw out any pictures, no matter how old or ridiculous they are (yes, like that photo of you dressed up as your abuela when you were five). One day you walk into the living room and see your mom flipping through the old photo albums, shaking her head. It’s clear she wants an updated photo album (one without the worn out edges). How else can she proudly show off her familia every time she has company?

2. Alone time away from her husband and children.

Latina moms put everyone before themselves…but sometimes they need a little time away from, well, everyone. If you notice your mom saying things like, “Ay Dios mío, if only I had a minute in the day for me…” then she’s probably hinting at some alone time to recharge. After all, she runs the show! She needs her rest! A relaxing afternoon away from the chaos of the familia is a great Mother’s Day gift.

3. Fresh flowers.

You’ve seen it before: one minute you’re chatting with your mom in the kitchen, and the next she’s holding the empty vase and looking at like it’s the saddest thing she’s ever seen. HINT: she wants fresh flowers from the market! What are you waiting for? Give the woman what she wants. If you want to be your mother’s favorite, get her a new vase to go with them.

4. A new, fluffy robe.

When your mom starts talking about how ratty her “old robe” is, she’s really saying, “Get me a new robe, child.” Every hard-working Latina mom deserves the fluffiest, comfiest robe ever. She won’t come out and ask you for one, but she’ll certainly talk about how raggedy her current robe is. Hook her up with a brand new one! It’ll be perfect for when she’s lounging around and watching her telenovelas.

5. A new ride.

Your amá might be thinking of getting a sweet new ride, if she’s been dropping subtle hints about the issues she has with her current car. She starts complaining that her car is so old she can’t charge the new fancy phone she got for Christmas or sync it up with the “TwoBlue no sé qué”. And if she starts talking that one comadre frenemy from down the block parading around, presumiendo, in her shiny new car… well, yeah. If that happens you should pretty much just know you need to look into hooking her up with an awesome new Toyota. It’ll be totally worth it though! Just think about her cruising up to her comadre’s house and saying “mira lo que me compraron mis niños.” Talk about bragging rights! Don’t you want that moment for her? Don’t you want your mom to have the best Mother’s Day ever?

Even though Latina moms tend to speak in code and it can be frustrating to figure out what the heck she’s trying to say, they deserve the world. Treat your mom like the queen that she is…especially on Mother’s Day.
