The Weeknd Collaborated With Rosalía in “La Fama” Music Video, Is Romeo Santos Next?

The Weeknd has gone bachata. The Canadian pop star sings in Spanish alongside Rosalía for her new single “La Fama.” They bring their deadly love affair with fame to life in the music video.

“La Fama” marks Rosalía and The Weeknd’s second collaboration.

The Weeknd first collaborated with Rosalía last year. The Spanish singer-songwriter was featured in a Spanglish remix of his global hit “Blinding Lights.” Last year, The Weeknd also sang in Spanish for the first time in a remix of Maluma’s “Hawái.” Their collaboration took the Colombian artist’s song to No. 12 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Weeknd becomes El Fín De Semana in “La Fama.”

During the time The Weeknd was dabbling in Latin music, his fans gave him the nickname “El Fín De Semana.” He embraced the alter-ego in the announcement of “La Fama” with Rosalía. The two artists wrote the song with producers Tainy, Sky Rompiendo, and El Guincho, Rosalía’s longtime collaborator. The Weeknd and Rosalía are backed by elements of bachata music with an alternative edge. The Weeknd channels his falsetto in Spanish to sing about the pains of fame. Rosalía details his unhealthy obsession with the lifestyle. Their collaboration is intoxicating.

“I wanted to write, in my own way, a bachata with a little story around ambition,” Rosalía said in a statement through her label Columbia. “Taking as a reference the lyrics of Rubén Blades or Patti Smith and the songs of Aventura, I ended up writing a story of romance with fame.”

The Weeknd’s bachata chops received a co-sign from Romeo Santos.

The Weeknd’s vocal performance in “La Fama” drew plenty of comparisons to Aventura frontman Romeo Santos. He actually received a co-sign from Santos, who posted about Rosalía’s song in his Instagram stories.

“I repeat! The season of amargue [bachata music] is coming,” Santos wrote. “This is huge! Rosalía ft The Weeknd.”

Fame kills in the “La Fama” music video.

The music video for “La Fama” sees Rosalía and The Weeknd bring that toxic romance with fame to life. The cinematic visuals were directed by Director X and features Mexican-American actor Danny Trejo. Rosalía appears to embody fame in the music video. She draws The Weeknd into her performance, which leads to his onscreen demise.

“La Fama” is one of the songs on Rosalia’s upcoming album “Motomami.” Her highly-anticipated third LP will be dropping in 2022.
