Versace Is Hitting Fashion Nova With A Lawsuit For Copying Their Iconic ‘Jungle Dress’ Famously Worn By J.Lo
The jungle dress, famously worn by Jennifer Lopez to the Grammy awards in 2000 has just been knocked off by e-tailer, Fashion Nova—and it’s safe to say that this isn’t by far the first time the online store has been accused of copying. But on this occasion, the Italian fashion house was not having it. Here’s all the tea.
The design famously worn by J.Lo at the Grammy Awards in 2000, was the reason why Google invented an image search option.
The dress has in fact become a sort of evergreen search for Google. Almost twenty years later, “People are still doing queries for ‘Jennifer Lopez green dress,’ ‘Jennifer Lopez jungle print dress,’ ‘Jennifer Lopez Grammys dress,’ [that] sort of thing,” said Cathy Edwards, director of engineering and product for Google Images.
Versace is hitting Fashion Nova with a lawsuit.
The Italian luxury label is suing online retailer Fashion Nova for copying its iconic green leaf-printed design. But it turns out, that the iconic “jungle dress” isn’t the only design that got Fashion Nova in trouble.
More of Versace’s iconic prints have been knocked off by Fashion Nova.
Alongside the Jungle Print, Versace has also taken legal action against Fashion Nova’s use of its black and gold Barocco design and its Pop Hearts design. Despite all three prints being copyrighted, the fast-fashion label has manufactured and sold remarkably similar versions on its own products.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit states that: “Fashion Nova’s ability to churn out new clothing so quickly is due in large part to its willingness to copy the copyrighted designs, trademarks and trade dress elements of well-known designers such as Versace, and trade on their creative efforts in order to bolster Fashion Nova’s bottom line.”
“Fashion Nova’s Infringing Apparel is plainly a deliberate effort to exploit the popularity and renown of Versace’s signature designs, and to trade on Versace’s valuable goodwill and business reputation.”
“Versace seeks to bring an end to Fashion Nova’s latest brazen attempt at copying the work of yet another famous and world-renowned designer.”
J.Lo then wore an updated version of the dress nearly 20 years later to close Versace’s spring/summer 2020 show during Milan Fashion Week.
Just this year, the pop star from the Bronx, hit the runway for Versace at Milan Fashion-week wearing the infamous leaf-print dress nearly 20 years later —and still slayed everyone in attendance with her toned body and godlike runway walk.
But this isn’t the first time Fashion Nova’s been called out for plagiarism.
Fashion Nova has previously been called out for copying designers; Kim Kardashian West criticized the brand for replicating her vintage Thierry Mugler gown, she even took to twitter to share her stance.
Instagram’s annointed fashion police, Diet Prada, has called out Fashion Nova many times —but on this particular scandal, they put Kim K on blast too.
DP argue that Kardashian has some sort of dealings with bargain fashion emporium Fashion Nova, after a rip-off of her archive Mugler gown appeared on the site. While this is nothing new for the “ultra-fast fashion” retailer, the images on the site are allegedly time stamped hours before she first wore the Mugler out in public —they even have a highlight on their Instagram page detailing the whole thing.
