Versace Is Hitting Fashion Nova With A Lawsuit For Copying Their Iconic ‘Jungle Dress’ Famously Worn By J.Lo

The jungle dress, famously worn by Jennifer Lopez to the Grammy awards in 2000 has just been knocked off by e-tailer, Fashion Nova—and it’s safe to say that this isn’t by far the first time the online store has been accused of copying. But on this occasion, the Italian fashion house was not having it. Here’s all the tea.

The design famously worn by J.Lo at the Grammy Awards in 2000, was the reason why Google invented an image search option.

The dress has in fact become a sort of evergreen search for Google. Almost twenty years later, “People are still doing queries for ‘Jennifer Lopez green dress,’ ‘Jennifer Lopez jungle print dress,’ ‘Jennifer Lopez Grammys dress,’ [that] sort of thing,” said Cathy Edwards, director of engineering and product for Google Images.

Versace is hitting Fashion Nova with a lawsuit.

The Italian luxury label is suing online retailer Fashion Nova for copying its iconic green leaf-printed design. But it turns out, that the iconic “jungle dress” isn’t the only design that got Fashion Nova in trouble.

More of Versace’s iconic prints have been knocked off by Fashion Nova.

Alongside the Jungle Print, Versace has also taken legal action against Fashion Nova’s use of its black and gold Barocco design and its Pop Hearts design. Despite all three prints being copyrighted, the fast-fashion label has manufactured and sold remarkably similar versions on its own products.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit states that: “Fashion Nova’s ability to churn out new clothing so quickly is due in large part to its willingness to copy the copyrighted designs, trademarks and trade dress elements of well-known designers such as Versace, and trade on their creative efforts in order to bolster Fashion Nova’s bottom line.”

“Fashion Nova’s Infringing Apparel is plainly a deliberate effort to exploit the popularity and renown of Versace’s signature designs, and to trade on Versace’s valuable goodwill and business reputation.”

“Versace seeks to bring an end to Fashion Nova’s latest brazen attempt at copying the work of yet another famous and world-renowned designer.”

J.Lo then wore an updated version of the dress nearly 20 years later to close Versace’s spring/summer 2020 show during Milan Fashion Week.

Just this year, the pop star from the Bronx, hit the runway for Versace at Milan Fashion-week wearing the infamous leaf-print dress nearly 20 years later —and still slayed everyone in attendance with her toned body and godlike runway walk.

But this isn’t the first time Fashion Nova’s been called out for plagiarism.

Fashion Nova has previously been called out for copying designers; Kim Kardashian West criticized the brand for replicating her vintage Thierry Mugler gown, she even took to twitter to share her stance.

Instagram’s annointed fashion police, Diet Prada, has called out Fashion Nova many times —but on this particular scandal, they put Kim K on blast too.

DP argue that Kardashian has some sort of dealings with bargain fashion emporium Fashion Nova, after a rip-off of her archive Mugler gown appeared on the site. While this is nothing new for the “ultra-fast fashion” retailer, the images on the site are allegedly time stamped hours before she first wore the Mugler out in public —they even have a highlight on their Instagram page detailing the whole thing.

Versace Just Dropped A Whole Telenovela For Their Holiday Campaign And The Drama Puts Rubí To Shame

versace / Instagram

And no, we’re not talking about ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’, that’s a different Versace-themed glamorous murder-mystery. This time, the Italian fashion house, known for its drama and campy decadence, produced a whole bite-sized Telenovela featuring its holiday 2019 collection. Think Veronica Castro in the 80s; big perms, bold statement jewelry, betrayal, murder and tax evasion. Not even Telemundo could’ve thought of a more twisted and fabulous story.

Versace’s Holiday Saga is a tumultuous and OTT Telenovela.

The concept was first ideated in collaboration with the American artist Sarah Baker and the UK art and fashion journal; Baroness Magazine. The six-part micro-telenovela includes all the traditional elements of Latino soap-operas that we’re all too familiar with; such as a filthy-rich family who owns an over the top mansion, a greedy antagonist (usually a sexy female), the wronged husband, the ingenue and the sketchy accountant.

The protagonist, Angelina, is a rich business woman who is suspected of having committed a crime.

Constructed as a series of letters written by the protagonist to Donatella herself, the story follows Angelina (played by Baker), the CEO of Narcissist Records who has been accused of stealing the smash hit “Spritz Me With Your Love” (lol), from an uncredited writer.

In telenovelas, people return from the dead, blackmail each other and plot the protagonist’s demise, and Versace’s version isn’t short of all that drama.

The writer of the song is in fact Angelina’s boy toy, “Angelo,” who —in true Telenovela style— appears to have mysteriously died after falling off a cliff. Angelina, suspects that her archenemy The Baroness—Angelo’s wife— played by top model Helena Christensen, is to blame.

If it all sounds twisted, over the top dramatic and just all around extra; wait until you see the visuals.

The 6 mini-episodes not only feature fabulously dressed models clad in all Versace outfits, but also a huge assortment of random Versace-emblazoned items. There’s Versace silverware, a Versace pool float, a Versace volleyball, a Versace ash tray, Versace martini glasses, and the list goes on.

By this point, if you grew up watching Telenovelas, you should know that nothing is as expected.

Telenovela plotlines are a twisted business. If you’ve watched classics like ‘La Usurpadora’, ‘Los Ricos Tambien Lloran’, ‘Rubi’, or ‘Maria Mercedes’, you’d know better than to assume that things will follow their natural course. In Versace’s story; Angelo is of course, not dead. The accountant is plotting to frame Angelina and marry her daughter —the ingenue— to keep Narcissist Records for himself. Angelina had an affair with her frienemy ‘The Baroness’s’ husband Angelo, and The Baroness is actually… drumroll please… an undercover spy.

You can watch the six-part series on Versace’s holiday campaign website.

Versace unleashed the first full episode as well as a director’s cut on their Youtube channel. The Italian house’s complete 6-episode soap opera, is available to view for free in the form of a ‘Versace Holiday Saga’ on the brand’s website.

There will also be a print edition of the story.

The actual print edition of the art and fashion magazine ‘Baroness’ will feature the story alongside an accompanying editorial shoot —which seems to be even steamier than the video clips.

Donatella’s take on the classic soap-opera has all of our Telenovela-loving hearts, obsessed.

Versace knows the importance of spectacle and drama. Donatella embraces over-the-top luxury and this tongue-in-cheek take on the campy Telenovela, is evocative of the 80s and 90s classics, us Latinx millennials, grew up watching. Angela and The Baroness might as well be characters in ‘Maria Mercedes’ or ‘Los Ricos Tambien Lloran’ and we can’t stop watching. It’s ridiculous and we’re sure you’ll love it, too.

As ridiculous as the narrative might seem, The Versace Saga gives us every single thing we need out of a Telenovela: sex, scandal, intrigue, decadence and sisterhood.

After the unravelling of the scandalous lives of the female protagonists, the campaign teaches us an important lesson in empowered sisterhood. Dismantling the misconception of ruthless powerful women in popular culture as spiteful, Angela and The Baroness actually patch things up and work together to unmask the real villains; Jacob and Angelo.

In this project, Baker and Donatella aim to subvert the judgement of ‘passional’ soap-star females fueled by theatricality. Instead they celebrate sisterhood by wrapping up the story with a collaborative female effort to overthrow the pangs of blackmail and deceit.

The holiday campaign features Versace Cruise 2020, and a wide selection of the brand’s famous medusa, emblazoned on household items. The collection is now shoppable on versace.com

Jennifer Lopez Wants to Play Batman One Day and Here’s What That All Latinx Cast Could Look Like

jlo / Instagram

Jennifer Lopez has proven over her long career that she can do anything. Whether she’s acting as a musician, actress or businesswoman, she’s shown what talent and dedication can bring to her every role. In fact, JLo is hoping to one day bring that famous work ethic to another unexpected part.

In a recent sit down for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” interview, JLo talked with the newly cast Batman, Robert Pattinson. During the captivating interview, the two began talking about how they choose the roles that they decide to take on. This brought up the topic of the upcoming “Batman” movie. When Lopez mentioned that she thought Pattison will make an excellent Batman, the actor countered by saying the Latina superstar would be a great Batman as well. To which, Lopez responded, “I could be Batman. Why not? I think as an actor, it would be fun to explore.”

This interaction got us thinking. We would love to see a “Batman” movie led by JLo as the Caped Crusader but an all Latinx cast would be even better. Gotham better get ready because here’s what an all Latinx “Batman” movie could look like.

Jennifer Lopez as Batman

What does it take to play Batman? It needs to be an actor who has the athleticism to do justice to the Dark Knight while still having the charisma to play the Bat’s billionaire counterpart. Anyone who’s seen JLo’s on-stage antics knows she’s got the skills to wear the cape and it’s no question that she’s a charismatic individual. To top it off, with movies like “Hustlers” under her belt, JLo has proven that she can lead to big bucks at the box office. As far as we’re concerned, she can play the superhero whenever she likes.

Diego Boneta as Robin

The actor who plays Robin will need to have boyish good looks, the ability to bring some humor to the script’s dark moments and the same athleticism as Batman. His staring role in “Rock of Ages” more than proved that Diego Boneta’s got the moves and his time on “Pretty Little Liars” and “90210” have cemented him as a heartthrob. Sounds like we’ve got ourselves a Boy Wonder.

Edward James Olmos as Alfred

Instagram / @sterling_gold_

Who better to play JLo’s father-like confidant than the man who first played her dad on the big screen. Edward James Olmos is definitely a legend in his craft and would bring an air of wisdom necessary to play Batman’s trusted butler. He’ll also make sure Batman isn’t leaving the cave in any bustiers.

Becky G as Batgirl

Instagram / @iambeckyg

With her role as the Yellow Ranger in the big screen adaptation of ‘Power Rangers,” Becky G has already  shown us that she’s got the skills to play a superhero. Her naturally spunky personality would also be perfect to bring the bold and sarcastic Batgirl to life in an all Latinx reboot.

Pedro Pascal as Catwoman

Instagram / @pascalispunk

If we are going to gender bend the role of Batman, we might as well do the same for the Bat’s love interest, Catwoman. His role as Oberyn Martell in “Game of Thrones” showed us what the actor can do with a staff. Just imagine that same skill applied with a whip instead and we’ve got ourselves a dynamite Catwoman. The possibility of seeing Pascal in a catsuit is an added bonus.

Benicio Del Toro as the Joker

Instagram / @actorzrevolutionz7

Benicio Del Toro has a talent for playing bad guys and, if the bad guys are more than slightly unhinged, it’s all the better. No bad guy is a bigger nemesis to the Caped Crusader than the Joker and we can definitely see Del Toro in this role. Think of his performance as Jack Rafferty in “Sin City” mixed with his time as The Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s the kind of energy he could bring to the Clown Prince of Gotham.

Cardi B as Poison Ivy

Instagram / @iamcardib

Let’s consider Cardi’s 2019 Halloween costume as her unofficial audition for Poison Ivy. A femme fatele that can have any man she wants eating out of the palm of her hand? That sounds like Cardi to us. Plus, the rapper would be rejoining her “Hustlers” costar JLo. Seeing them pole dance together was just the preview to them fighting each other in this all Latinx reboot.

Oscar Isaac as the Penguin

Instagram / @oscarisaacdaily

Oscar Isaac is another actor who has a history of taking on strange and thought provoking roles. Though he’s best known now for is time as Poe in “Star Wars,” he’s also played straight-up villians. His performances as Blue Jones in “Sucker Punch” and Nathan Bateman in “Ex Machina” truly show the range he can bring to a complex character such as the Penguin. Added bonus: he looks great in a three-piece suit.
