ESPN Anchor’s Touching Recollection Of Kobe Bryant Bragging About Being A ‘Girl Dad’ Will Bring You To Tears

As sports fans mourn the death of the beloved NBA icon Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gigi, various anecdotes about his life have circulated. Countless stories about his intense work ethic, sense of humor and extreme love for being a father to his daughters. In fact, various sites have reflected on the passion for parenting the late basketball player displayed.

In perhaps, one of the most moving reflections of this love for being a father, ESPN anchor Elle Duncan shared an emotional story about her first and only encounter with Bryant.

During a recent broadcast of “Sports Center” Duncan shared a story about Bryant’s passion for being a “girl dad.”

Reflecting on her one interaction with Bryant, Duncan recalled meeting him at a time in which she was eight months pregnant. Duncan had approached the basketball player for an interview but was interrupted when Bryant became so excited by the sight of her pregnancy that he began to ask her for details about her baby. He asked when she was due and if she knew the sex of her baby.

“‘A girl,'” Duncan had told him before saying that the basketball player immediately high-fived her. “‘Girls are the best,'” he said.

Duncan recalled that she had asked him for advice on raising girls as he had three at the time. “He said, ‘just be grateful that you’ve been given that gift because girls are amazing.’ His third daughter, Bianka, was about a year-and-a-half old at the time, so I asked if he wanted more children. He said that his wife Vanessa really wanted to try again for a boy, but was sort of jokingly concerned that it would be another girl. And I was like, ‘four girls, are you joking? What would you think? How would you feel?'”

Duncan recalled how Kobe excitedly declared that girls were the best.

“Without hesitation, he said ‘I would have five more girls if I could. I’m a girl dad,'” Duncan recalled before also sharing that at the time Bryant had boasted his daughter’s Gigi’s praises for her own basketball talent.

“When it came to sports, he said that his oldest daughter was an accomplished volleyball player and that the youngest was a toddler, so TBD,” Duncan explained. “But that middle one, he said that middle one was ‘a monster, she’s a beast. She’s better than I was at her age. She’s got it.’ That middle one, of course, was Gigi.”

Holding back tears, Duncan said “When I reflect on this tragedy, and that half hour I spent with Kobe Bryant two years ago,” she added, “I suppose that the only small source of comfort for me is knowing he died doing what he loved the most: being a dad. Being a girl dad.”

Duncan’s story about Bryant quickly gained attention on social media and prompted fathers to share photos of their daughters with the hashtag #girldad.

Dad’s across Twitter and Instagram have been sharing what being a girl dad has meant to them in such sweet ways.

And the hashtag is now trending on Twitter with the sweetest pictures.

And the most touching words from other dads.

Like this post will make you cry.

And this one will break your heart.

But fortunately, so many of the posts are filled with hope.

And so much praise for Bryant and his girls.

Bryant died at the age of 41 and is survived by his wife and three other daughters.

Over seven months have passed since basketball great Kobe Bryant lost his life alongside his daughter Gigi and seven others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. In the months since his death fans have paid tribute to the former shooting guard who left behind three other daughters and his wife Vanessa and watched as his family has slowly attempted to pick up the pieces of their lives without them. Since then, they’ve celebrated holidays and their own birthdays.

For the first time, over the weekend, the Bryants celebrated Kobe’s birthday.

On Sunday, Vanessa Bryant shared a heart-wrenching message to her late husband and daughter on what would have been Kobe’s 42nd birthday.

“To my baby~ Happy birthday. I love you and miss you more than I can ever explain. I wish you and Gigi were here to celebrate YOU! I wish I could make you your fav food or a birthday cake with my Gigi. I miss your big hugs, your kisses, your smile, your loud ass deep laugh,” she wrote in a post on Instagram.”I miss teasing you, making you laugh and bursting your bubble. I miss you sitting on my lap like my big baby that you are. I think about your tenderness and patience all the time. I think about everything you would do in situations to help me deal with everything thrown my way.”

Bryant went on to open up about her struggles to move on since her husband and daughter’s deaths which occurred this past year on January 26.

“Our lives feel so empty without you and Gigi. I’ve been completely broken inside. As much as I want to cry, I put a smile on my face to make our daughters days shine a little brighter. I’m not the strong one, they are. They’re strong and resilient. I’m sure you’re proud of them. They put a smile on my face everyday,” Vanessa wrote.”I wish I could wake up from this horrible nightmare. I wish I could surprise our girls and welcome you and Gigi home to us. I’m mad I didn’t go first. I always wanted to go first so that I selfishly didn’t have to feel this heartache. You were supposed to miss me. Gigi was supposed to be here with her sisters. It should’ve been me.”

Vanessa ended her post by thanking her late husband for showing her true love and for loving her “enough to last several lifetimes.”

“I know my Gigi is celebrating you like she always has on our special days. I miss my thoughtful princess so much! Natalia, Gianna, Bianka, Capri and I wish you a happy birthday my love. I love you for now, forever and for always,” Bryant finished the post.

Fans of the Bryants were quick to commemorate him all throughout Sunday.

To celebrate Kobe, the Lakers celebrated Kobe’s birthday by sharing a reel of his game highlights. Nike also took part by debuting a commercial titled “Better | Mamba Forever.” The ad was narrated by rapper Kendrick Lamar and was launched for what the shoe company is calling “Mamba Week.”

“Kobe taught us to be better,” Lamar recalled in the ad which features video and audio of Kobe, scenes from the Black Lives Matter protests, and clips of Nike-sponsored athletes and fans he inspired with his talent.

The Bryants have long been supporters of Swift over the years.

Kobe Bryant joined Swift onstage during two of her Staples Center performances. Once for her “1989” tour in 2015 and another time in 2018. Back when the singer went on her “Reputation” tour, she posed alongside the Bryants including (Kobe’s late daughter Gigi) backstage.

“My heart is in pieces hearing the news of this unimaginable tragedy,” Swift wrote in response to the crash that killed Bryant in January. “Kobe meant so much to me and to us all. Sending my prayers, love, and endless condolences to Vanessa and the family and anyone who lost someone on that flight.”
