The Director of ‘Spy Kids’ Made a New Netflix Kids Movie Starring Pedro Pascal

Robert Rodriguez, the beloved Mexican-American director of family-favorite classics like “Spy Kids” and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D” is coming out with a new kids movie on Netflix called “We Can Be Heroes”.

According to Netflix, the film will be set in the “Sharkboy and Lavagirl” cinematic universe, and will function as a “standalone sequel” to the classic kids movie. The movie is set to drop on New Year’s Day.

The story will follow the children of a group of superheroes called “The Heroics”. The children of The Heroics must save the planet after their parents are kidnapped by alien invaders. According to the information that Netflix has released, Sharkboy and Lavagirl will be two of the parents who are kidnapped by these villainous aliens. (Yes, Sharkboy and Lavagirl now have a kid together. Yes, we thought they were siblings this entire time.)

While Taylor Dooley, who plays Lavagirl, is reprising her role for “We Can Be Heroes”, Taylor Lautner, unfortunately, will not.

An actor named JJ Dashnaw will step into Sharkboy’s shoes. But to soften the blow of that disappointing recasting news, none of other than Pedro Pascal will be playing one of the lead roles in the movie, a character named Marcus Moreno who is “a superhero on the verge of retirement”.

“I’ve wanted to work with Pedro since forever,” Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly. “[Marcus] can be a badass if he needs to. He takes the glasses off, and he looks legit.”

Although Robert Rodriguez is well-known for his family movies like the “Spy Kids” franchise as well as “Shark Boy and Lavagirl”, he has recently focuses his career on more adult fare like “Machete” and “Alita: Battle Angel”. Fans of “Spy Kids” are excited to be treated to a movie that seems like it will be a spiritual successor of the 2001 film. Rodriguez says that families being stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic has simply fueled nostalgia for his popular kids movies.

“A lot of families have spent a lot of time together,” he told EW. “I’ve been getting calls from all kinds of studios: ‘Reboot Spy Kids.’ ‘Reboot Sharkboy.’ Of course they want to. They’re all sitting at home with their kids.”

Just this year, Robert Rodriguez talked about how hard he had to fight to make the “Spy Kids” family Latino. “For me it was a big victory … to have the kids in ‘Spy Kids’ be a Latin family,” he explained at a virtual Comic Con panel. “The studio was like, ‘Why are you making them Latin, though, why don’t you just make them American?’ They are American, they’re based on my family.”

“There were no roles being written for Latins at that time, back in 1999, nor were they being cast. If I wasn’t Latin, I would have given up the fight,” he continued. “When you’re doing anything that’s new, this just happens to be about diversity, you’re going to get a question and you have to have a good answer.”

We’re excited to take a look at this new kid-friendly movie! We hope it’s as entertaining as “Spy Kids”.

With everything going on in the world it can be easy to get distracted, or even fall out of the 24/7 news cycle. But every once in awhile there’s something so good and so wonderful that you can’t help but to get sucked back in. And this time it was Pedro Pascal – star of The Mandalorian and Wonder Woman 1984 – that had all the Internet talking after his recent appearance at the BAFTAs.

Pedro Pascal presented at this year’s BAFTAs and looked great doing it!

On Sunday, the British Academy of Film hosted the 2021 BAFTA Awards. Among the presenters were Mandalorian and Wonder Woman 1984 star, Pedro Pascal.

The Mandalorian and Narcos star presented the award for Best Foreign Film which went to the Danish movie, Another Round. But Pascal’s fans had one thing on their mind – and it wasn’t the award he was presenting.

Like several presenters before him, Pascal put his own spin on the black tie event by leaving his tie at home. As reported by GQ, the Wonder Woman 1984 star was dressed in a Prada tuxedo coat, which he paired with a white shirt, fitted suit trousers, and slick black shoes. Combined with his messy hair, his glasses, and that smile, it proved a rather intoxicating mix.

The former Game of Thrones actor has a loyal fan base, and they immediately took to social media to share their thoughts about Pascal’s BAFTA appearance.

Many pointed out he was a living, talking, walking thirst trap.

There were plenty who took to Twitter to express their absolute thirst of this man.

Another fan embraced his quirky beauty!

One Twitter user was going gaga for their ‘king,’ “Our king, @PedroPascal1, has a bald patch in his beard & stands pigeon toed & he’s so beautiful & loved. You don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. In fact, perfection is impossible to fulfill. Your imperfections are what make you beautiful. Be proud of them. You are loved.”

For many, it came down to that award-winning smile.

I mean you can’t deny the guy has a great smile.

But Pascal wasn’t the only one at the BAFTAs. Hugh Grant also gave a classically Hugh Grant speech about Ang Lee, and BAFTA Rising Star winner Bukky Bakray paid tribute to those who died in the past year in a moving speech that belied the newcomer’s age. And the likes of Nomadland and Promising Young Woman scooped up major prizes.

Gabriel Fernandez’s Mother, Pearl Fernandez, Is Trying to Have Her Murder Conviction Thrown Out

Gabriel Fernandez’s mother, Pearl Fernandez, is trying to have her murder conviction thrown out. The 37-year-old woman has been in jail since 2018 for the murder and torture of her eight-year old son.

Pearl Fernandez is petitioning the court for resentencing, hoping to have her first-degree murder and/or second-degree murder charges thrown out.

Fernandez is hoping to have her sentence vacated based off of new changes to the California state penal code. “I think that she feels that somehow maybe, you know, the special circumstance will be dismissed or maybe she’ll have a chance that the D.A. will agree with the petition,” Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami said to CBSLA.

In June 2018, a judge sentenced Pearl Fernandez to life without parole. The judge charged Pearl Fernandez with the 2013 torture and killing of her eight-year-old son, Gabriel Fernandez.

On May 22, 2013, Gabriel Fernandez died after suffering a fatal beating from his mother. Pearl Fernandez was allegedly angry that he didn’t clean up his toys.

The details of Pearl and her boyfriend’s lengthy torture campaign against Gabriel Fernandez are both gruesome and numerous. Over the course of his eight-month stay with Isauro Aguirre, the couple broke his bones, burned him with cigarettes, pepper-sprayed him, and forced him to eat his own vomit as well as animal feces. And that is just a short-list of what they did.

The case came to national attention after the release of the 2020 Netflix documentary, “The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez“. The documentary shone a spotlight on the insidious nature of child abuse. It also highlighted the systematic failures of the social services system that fails to protect children.

Elected officials have expressed their disgust at Pearl Fernandez for trying to escape justice by taking advantage of updated laws.

“The policies and directives from my office and these new laws created by the Legislature are emboldening murderers of children to apply to be re-sentenced,” said Deputy DA Hatami to City News Service. “This is completely unfair to the surviving families and their loved ones.”

He continued: “Families now have to relive all the horror that was perpetrated upon a small and helpless child. Based upon all the evidence presented at the grand jury, which was made public, and the jury trial, Pearl Fernandez was a major participant in the torture and murder of little Gabriel.”

It seems obvious by the fact that Pearl Fernandez is trying to get out of jail after torturing her son to death, that she isn’t remorseful about her actions.

Any other mother who killed her son would probably want to spend the rest of her life in jail instead of trying to find a way to get out of it.

If you believe someone you know is experiencing–or committing–child abuse, there are resources to help. Call the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-Child or 1-800-422-4453, or go to www.childhelp.org. Staying vigilant could help save a child like Gabriel Fernandez.
