After Winning Four Latin American Music Awards, Prince Royce Appears In New Video With Chris Brown

“I’ve been wanting to put this project out for a long time in my head and now it’s a reality.”

Prince Royce cleaned up at the Latin American Music Awards on Telemundo on Thursday night. The star studded event had artists like Camila Cabello, Ozuna, and Pitbull in attendance. Royce took home four awards, tying with boy band CNCO for the most of the night. His duet with Shakira “Déjà vu” won the award for “Song Of The Year.” He was having a pretty big night already when video director and music A&R “Spiffy TV,” whose real name is Carlos Suarez, dropped a music video with Royce featuring Chris Brown. “Just As I Am,” is a bachata song infused with R&B with both gentlemen crooning about acceptance. As problematic as that comes across for an artist like Chris Brown, who has a history of abuse against women, the fans in the comment section of the music video are surprisingly pro Chris Brown, posting support for him and “#TeamBreezy” throughout.

The collaboration was part of Spiff TV’s Sony Music project “The Union,” which will feature collaborations between Latino artists and more mainstream artists.

Combining Latin America’s acts with hip-hop and R&B artists from the U.S., the album will capitalize on the phenomenon that occurred on “Despacito” between Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber. Some songs in the pipeline will see Yandel with Future, J Balvin with Fetty Wap, and DJ Khaled, Arcangel and T.I. on his next song entitled “Wells Fargo.” Spiff TV started his career working with artist Rick Ross as well as French Montana, and Drake, but says he always wanted to combine what he learned helping make popular music in English with his own cultural Latino background. He told Leila Cobo for Billboard “Being Latino I always wanted to bring both together and to be the best of the best.”

He Trained Beyonce To Sing In Spanish For 'Mi Gente' But He Gives Blue Ivy All The Credit For Making It Happen

Coast City is a Latin music duo made up of Jean Rodriguez, Luis Fonsi’s brother, and Danny Flores, a Sony music artist and producer. The two have been behind the albums of some of Latin music’s most celebrated acts including Prince Royce and CNCO. But, Rodriguez has another point of pride in music…

Jean Rodriguez, member of Coast City, is responsible for Beyoncé’s part in the “Mi Gente” remix.

“I didn’t know I was working with her until day of because they kept everything under wraps,” Rodriguez says. “That was interesting because it added to the butterflies because I had no idea who I was working with.”

All Rodriguez knew was that he was going to be working with someone who was massive in the music world. But there was one thing he was about to learn and that’s that Blue has a lot of pull when it comes to her mom’s projects.

“The deal maker, the decision was actually Blue [Ivy],” Rodriguez says.

“I’m not sure about right now but at the time, ‘Mi Gente’ was her favorite song,” Rodriguez says. “She kept asking for it. Even when we recorded it, Blue was there during the session just jumping around and dancing. She was really the decision maker.”

Blue was so instrumental in getting Beyoncé on the ‘Mi Gente’ remix that she was given a shoutout in the song.

Rodriguez explains that the line, “Azul are you with me” is in honor of Blue getting her mom to sign on for the project.

“I would give her a high-five right now,” Danny Flores says about convincing Blue convincing Beyoncé to work a single that would help so many people. “I’m sure she just loved the song. It’s song that kids get into so I would definitely give her a high-five.”

This isn’t the first time Coast City has worked close with J Balvin.

Flores and Rodriguez were there to help produce “Hey Ma” with Camila Cabello, J Balvin, and Pitbull for “Fate of the Furious.”

The duo not only create their own music, they also produce albums and Rodriguez is a vocal producer. Essentially, Rodriguez helps the artists he works with find the right sound for the song they are recording or creating.

If you want to know more about the band, they just released their new single “Desconocidos.”
