Queer People Are Shouting Their Gratitude For Naya Rivera’s Trailblazing Character Santana Lopez

There are few queer characters the people can point to in the past as being someone that changed their lives. Santana Lopez, Naya Rivera’s character on “Glee,” is one of them. Even if you’ve never watched “Glee,” Rivera’s character touched you because of how that representation is so important and empowering.

Naya Rivera’s place in LGBTQ+ media representation will be her long-lasting legacy.

Rivera brought us Santana Lopez, a queer Latina navigating the world of high school in a small town. For many, this kind of representation was so rare and often poorly done that Rivera’s command of the role was impactful. You didn’t have to be an avid viewer of the show to understand and appreciate the magnitude of Santana Lopez.

Rivera brought our experience directly to the mainstream and forced our own classmates to think about the way they saw queer people.

Rivera’s ability to capture the awkwardness and terror of being a closeted queer student in high school still resonates. It is a piece of nostalgia that is so deeply ingrained in queer people that it’s hard not to be emotional about Rivera’s sudden and tragic death.

Who can forget the moment Santana used “Landslide” to tell Brittany that she loved her.

The emotion of a love that is not easy to confess and live authentically is real. Ask any queer person you know about coming to terms with her sexuality in high school and you will hear about the fear and excitement. You will hear about the strategic allyships that epitomize the constant battle between being open and staying safe.

Rivera was more than an actress, she was an ally and advocate during her time on “Glee.”

Season 2, when Rivera’s feelings for Brittany (played by Heather Morris) grew, aired from 2010 to 2011. It was a time when marriage equality was not nationwide. Some states still barred same-sex couples from adopting children. Yet, queer high school and college students had a chance to see their experience mirrored because of Rivera’s insistence.

Rivera’s death is a major loss for the queer community that got our strength and courage from her.

Knowing that all of the “Glee” fans were rooting for and falling in love with Santana Lopez gave us a chance to breathe and feel accepted. Adding her Latina heritage was so important. Queer people of color, who have faced increased scrutiny from their own families, had someone representing them completely and sincerely.

Demi Lovato paid tribute by remembering the time she played Santana Lopez’s girlfriend.

The queer Latina love was not lost on fellow queer Latinos. Lovato herself was not out about her sexuality at the time and she admits in her post that Rivera inspired her. Rivera’s efforts to give the character an accurate and respectful storyline will forever be praised and admired as a fully realized manifestation of our experience.

Thank you for being someone we didn’t know we needed, Naya.

Our hearts are broken and our eyes are wet. We send love and hope to your loved ones. Rest in power, mija. We love you and will never forget what you did for our community.

Someone Asked For Anya Taylor-Joy And Zendaya To Portray A Lesbian Couple And Twitter Said Yes

Anya Taylor-Joy is definitely having a moment after the incredible success of “The Queen’s Gambit.” The Argentinian actress is on everyone’s mind after seeing her as a chess playing genius. Now, people want to see her and Zendaya as a lesbian couple in a period piece.

One tweet has sparked a fantastical conversation.

Author Tiffany Summer tweeted a fantasy project she would love to see: Zendaya and Anya Taylor Joy as lovers in a period piece. The photos that she uses are of the two at the 2018 Met Gala. That year’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” created some of the most iconic looks. The two women happened to come in outfits that could be from the same time period.

Some people are already trying to write this story to get it made.

The world seems to be ready for this story to become a thing. Queer representation is so needed right now. While there have been more queer stories told, people clearly want and need more lesbian stories out there. It is also something we have all seen from these two ladies.

Zendaya plays Rue in “Euphoria” and has even won an Emmy for her role in the HBO show. Rue is a queer teen and we have seen her relationship with Jules in the popular show.

Anya Taylor-Joy is fresh off of the success of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” While her character, Beth Harmon, isn’t explicitly queer, there was a moment in the show. Beth spent a night with a French woman that she found attractive while in Paris for a tournament.

Basically, we have already seen these women play queer women and we want more.

There is a lot of interest in Taylor-Joy and Zendaya on their own. The two actresses are big names and their fan bases continue to grow. A mash-up of these two women would likely be a success.

Some people tweeted their discontent for the pairing of two more thin, femme lesbians in another period piece. The complaints include criticism that the tweet highlights non queer women to play queer roles.

Meanwhile, some people pointed out that this pairing could be the perfect way to do a live-action version of “Utena.”

“Revolutionary Girl Utena” is an anime show that aired in 1997. Utena is a tomboyish girl who demonstrates many masculine qualities, including impressive sword-wielding abilities. The entire time she is participating in a series of duels to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a.k.a. Rose Bride. Seems like a real fit, tbh.

Months have passed with quite a few additional ups and downs but Demi Lovato hasn’t forgotten about her late friend and former Glee costar, Naya Rivera. Five months after Rivera’s body was found following a disappearance during a boating trip with her son, Lovato paid a tribute to the actress on Instagram.

In a post shared to her Instagram story on Sunday, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer, remembered Rivera in a video.

Lovato shared a video of the gleaming sun while she was on a hike and captioned the video “Miss You [Naya Rivera].” In a reference to a song that Lovato sang with Rivera, the singer played a clip of The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” in the background.

Lovato and Rivera’s characters (Dani and Santana Lopez) fell in love after singing “Here Comes the Sun” during a shift at a diner in the fifth season of the musical drama series.

Rivera’s body was found in Lake Piru in Ventura County, California on July 13.

Her body was found five days after she disappeared during a boat excursion with her 5-year-old son Josey. Soon after Rivera was found, Lovato reflected on her costar writing that she would “forever cherish” her role as Rivera’s girlfriend on the series.

“RIP Naya Rivera. I’ll forever cherish the opportunity to play your girlfriend on Glee,” Lovato wrote on Instagram at the time. “The character you played was groundbreaking for tons of closeted queer girls (like me at the time) and open queer girls, and your ambition and accomplishments were inspiring to Latina women all over the world.”

“My heart goes out to your loved ones at this time.. ❤️🕊,” she wrote at the end of her caption.
