Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was a DEA agent who was tortured and murder in Mexico in 1985. His murder sparked the largest DEA homicide investigation ever and served as a storyline in Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico.” Amazon Prime is diving into the story of Camarena’s death in a four-part docuseries called “The Last Narc.”

Amazon Prime is diving deep into the death of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.

Director Tiller Russell told TV insider that the docuseries a look into the “most infamous murder in the history of the War on Drugs.” Camarena’s death was certainly one of the most publicized moments of the Ward on Drugs.”

The trailer for the docuseries is promising the audience a look at the famous case through the eyes and stories of those closest to it. Camarena’s widow, Geneva “Mika” Camarena, and various DEA agents were involved in the making of the docuseries. Each person offers up the pieces of the story they know to paint a more intimate look at the case.

“The Last Narc” talks to those closest to Camarena to tell the story of his death.

The crew behind “The Last Narc” spoke with people with an intimate knowledge of Camarena’s life and tragic death. Camarena’s widow expressed his lifelong desire to fight against crime and bring bad guys to justice. She remembers that at 18 he wanted to be an FBI agent.

Though Camarena didn’t become an FBI agent, he did work his way up within the DEA. Camarena joined the law enforcement agency in 1975 in Calexico. Two years later he was working in the Fresno office. By 1981, Camarena was working out of the DEA’s Guadalajara office.

Camarena’s death sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community.

In 1984, a major marijuana growing operation worth millions was captured and destroyed by federal agents. It was suspected that Camarena, who had infiltrated the drug ring, was the person behind the information being shared with federal agents.

Camarena was abducted and February 7, 1985 as a result, and was tortured and murdered. According to reports, Camarena was tortured for 30 hours before being murdered. His body was discovered outside of a town in Michoacán on March 5, 1985. His head had been pierced by a metal object and his ribs were broken.

One of the people interviewed in the series makes the argument that the U.S. government was involved.

Conspiracies of government involvement, on both sides, have persisted for decades. A popular theory paints members of the Mexican government as being involved in the capture and murder of Camarena because of money ties.
