People Are Just Learning That Anya Taylor-Joy Is Latina And They Are Living For It

Anya Taylor-Joy is the lead of Netflix’s newest hit show “The Queen’s Gambit.” The show follows a girl in an orphanage who ends up being a chess master. While rocketing to stardom for her talent, Beth is grappling with her own addiction.

There’s little arguing that “The Queen’s Gambit” isn’t the most popular show on Netflix.

Ask anyone and they will likely tell you that they both watched the show and loved it. The show starts with a young girl showing off her impressive chess talent while in an orphanage in the 1950s. After that, she beings an unexpected rise to fame that riddled with addiction to pills.

Anya Taylor-Joy brings Beth Harmon to life on the Netflix show. Her portrayal is one that stands out among the many performances that have caught our attention during the year os quarantining and working from home. People are just realizing that the actress is also Latina.

People were not expecting Taylor-Joy to be fluent in Spanish.

If you do a little digging on the Internet it becomes clear that she would be fluent in Spanish. Not only is the actress Argentinian, she was raised in Argentina. Understanding that would help to make sense of the actresses sudden ability to speak Spanish with the ease of a native speaker.

People are already calling for her to be cast in the next Evita adpatation.

Tbh, yes. Yes to every bit of this idea. Imagine having a Argentinian who can speak perfect Spanish and can easily be done up to look like Evita playing Evita. It would be a rare moment for Hollywood to cast someone perfectly suited for a role based on their background and language perfection. Let’s make this happen, people. Taylor-Joy should be the next Evita.

If she can make Beth Harmon so real and loveable, imagine what else she can do.

Do yourself a favor and watch “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix. The show will keep you captivated through every episode and you’ll be supporting Latina talent as a lead in a major show.

Way to go, Anya. We love to see it.

Netflix’s new show, “Selena: The Series” is set to premiere this Friday and everyone who was a fan of the incomparable Selena Quintanilla is beside themselves with excitement.

We don’t know a ton about the upcoming series yet, just the little information that Netflix has released about the general plot and cast. Per Netflix, the series will focus on Selena as she “comes of age and realizes her dreams”.

It will also focus on her family and, of course, her music. According to reports, we also know that the Quintanilla family is involved in the series. Relative unknown Christian Serratos will be playing La Reina herself.

But what we’ve all been dying to know since the new series was announced in 2018 is: What does JLo think?

Lopez famously played Selena to great critical acclaim in 1997. Well, folks, we finally have an answer! Lopez appeared on the series’ official Instagram account to give the upcoming series her full support.

In a video posted to the account, Lopez talks about the new series. “Guys, I don’t know if you’ve heard about this new Selena series on Netflix,” Lopez says, laughing a bit because yes we all know and we literally can’t wait. “Playing Selena was kind of a landmark moment in my career. And I was so excited when I saw the trailer and heard about it.”

She also added that she thinks the new show will introduce tons of new fans to Selena’s story and her music.

“It’s a great way for this generation to get to know Selena,” Lopez continued on the Instagram video. “I love Selena. She’s such a big part of my life and my career. And I can’t wait to see it!”

Jennifer Lopez famously starred in the original movie about the Queen of Tejano music in 1997. At the time of its release, the movie was a critical and commercial hit. It’s no wonder that, in the time of spin-offs and reboots, Netflix decided to cash in on the devotion of Quintanilla’s built-in audience.

Christian Serratos is definitely feeling the pressure when it comes to portraying Selena after Lopez’s pivotal 1997 performance.

Addressing the pressure of tackling her own version of Selena Quintanilla after Jennifer Lopez’s version has become so popular over the years, Serratos said she’s trying not to let the pressure get to her.

“Sometimes I do have to remind myself that I can’t please everybody because I’m human,” she said in an interview with The Big Ticket. “But the thing I tried to do first and foremost was to honestly portray her spirit because I think that’s what made her so lovely and so iconic.”

The Director of ‘Spy Kids’ Made a New Netflix Kids Movie Starring Pedro Pascal

Robert Rodriguez, the beloved Mexican-American director of family-favorite classics like “Spy Kids” and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D” is coming out with a new kids movie on Netflix called “We Can Be Heroes”.

According to Netflix, the film will be set in the “Sharkboy and Lavagirl” cinematic universe, and will function as a “standalone sequel” to the classic kids movie. The movie is set to drop on New Year’s Day.

The story will follow the children of a group of superheroes called “The Heroics”. The children of The Heroics must save the planet after their parents are kidnapped by alien invaders. According to the information that Netflix has released, Sharkboy and Lavagirl will be two of the parents who are kidnapped by these villainous aliens. (Yes, Sharkboy and Lavagirl now have a kid together. Yes, we thought they were siblings this entire time.)

While Taylor Dooley, who plays Lavagirl, is reprising her role for “We Can Be Heroes”, Taylor Lautner, unfortunately, will not.

An actor named JJ Dashnaw will step into Sharkboy’s shoes. But to soften the blow of that disappointing recasting news, none of other than Pedro Pascal will be playing one of the lead roles in the movie, a character named Marcus Moreno who is “a superhero on the verge of retirement”.

“I’ve wanted to work with Pedro since forever,” Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly. “[Marcus] can be a badass if he needs to. He takes the glasses off, and he looks legit.”

Although Robert Rodriguez is well-known for his family movies like the “Spy Kids” franchise as well as “Shark Boy and Lavagirl”, he has recently focuses his career on more adult fare like “Machete” and “Alita: Battle Angel”. Fans of “Spy Kids” are excited to be treated to a movie that seems like it will be a spiritual successor of the 2001 film. Rodriguez says that families being stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic has simply fueled nostalgia for his popular kids movies.

“A lot of families have spent a lot of time together,” he told EW. “I’ve been getting calls from all kinds of studios: ‘Reboot Spy Kids.’ ‘Reboot Sharkboy.’ Of course they want to. They’re all sitting at home with their kids.”

Just this year, Robert Rodriguez talked about how hard he had to fight to make the “Spy Kids” family Latino. “For me it was a big victory … to have the kids in ‘Spy Kids’ be a Latin family,” he explained at a virtual Comic Con panel. “The studio was like, ‘Why are you making them Latin, though, why don’t you just make them American?’ They are American, they’re based on my family.”

“There were no roles being written for Latins at that time, back in 1999, nor were they being cast. If I wasn’t Latin, I would have given up the fight,” he continued. “When you’re doing anything that’s new, this just happens to be about diversity, you’re going to get a question and you have to have a good answer.”

We’re excited to take a look at this new kid-friendly movie! We hope it’s as entertaining as “Spy Kids”.
