Stephen Colbert Called Out Trump’s Cowardice For Making Jeff Sessions Announce DACA’s Rescission
“Even though his decision is unpopular, Trump bravely stepped up, then cringed back, and had somebody else announce it.”
Stephen Colbert did not hold back against the Trump administration’s decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Despite White House officials saying President Trump himself would be making the announcement, Trump had Attorney General Jeff Sessions address the media on Sept. 5 to break the news that DACA was being rescinded. Colbert zeroed in on Sessions’ claim that their decision “does not mean that they [DACA recipients] are bad people or that our nation disrespects or demeans them in any way.”
“You’re right, Jeff. Deporting innocent children does not mean they’re bad people,” Colbert says. “It means you’re a bad person.”
Colbert then changes gears and talks about the press briefing by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. He first discredited her comment about Congress needing to do their job or “letting someone else do it.” Colbert points out that is exactly the reason we even had DACA — Obama signed an executive order implementing DACA because Congress did not move on immigration reform. Then he shows the clip where Huckabee mistakenly referred to Trump as President Obama.
“It’s okay,” Colbert says. “We’re sorry he’s president, too.”
