Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro Visits Trump And Declares Mutual Interest In Traditional Families

Brazilian President Jair Boslnaro is in the United States in an official trip to meet with U.S. officials. He arrived on Tuesday and has already caused a stir in the press because of his comments at a press conference at the White House with President Trump at his side. Here’s a little breakdown of Bolsonaro’s comments on his first day visiting the U.S.

President Jair Bolsonaro has been nicknamed the “Trump of the Tropics” because of his embrace of right extremist ideology and the policies he has pursued since being elected. Within his first couple of days in office, Bolsonaro set his sights on rolling back LGBTQ+, indigenous, and women’s rights. He has been able to achieve his goal with sweeping executive orders that have left advocates and activists angry and on edge.

“Brazil and the United States stand side by side in their efforts to ensure liberties and respect to traditional family lifestyles, respect to God our creator, and stand against gender ideologies and politically incorrect attitudes and against fake news,” Bolsonaro said Tuesday, through a translator.

Bolsonaro’s use of “traditional family lifestyles” should not be confused as anything other than a dog whistle to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations and people. The alt-right and evangelical communities have used “traditional family” as a phrase to hide behind while lobbying for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Bolsonaro declaring the U.S. as an ally in this fight has set off alarms throughout the LGBTQ+ community.

People not only noticed Bolsonaro’s comment, but they also picked up on Trump’s passive agreement with the statement.

Trump did not make any vocal agreements with the Brazilian leader’s comments but nodded along in agreement. While many Trump critics are not expecting the president to make vocal and definitive declarations against such rhetoric, his perceived agreement caught everyone’s attention.

Trump has claimed to be a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, but his actions have spoken volumes about what’s actually true. His own vice president, Mike Pence, is a strong and outspoken opponent against LGBTQ+ rights. The Trump administration has taken steps to attack members of the community, most famously with his ban of trans people serving in the military. Cozying up to Bolsonaro is another red flag for the LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. and abroad.
