“We understand that David has been released from the hospital. The family will be issuing a statement on his condition this week,” a Red Fox representative said in an email according to Reuters.
In June, it was reported that the legendary Boston Red Sox star had been shot at a club in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz had been shot in the lower back and/or abdominal region and that he immediately underwent surgery at a local hospital.
Ortiz had suffered organ damage after a man shot him in the back. According to ESPN reports from June, a team of doctors conducted surgery to “remove part of Ortiz’s intestines and colon, as well his gallbladder.”

According to a family source, Ortiz will continue his rehabilitation at home after being released from a Boston hospital on Friday. He will be closely monitored by nurses around the clock and regularly be visited by his personal physician.
“He will continue to undergo all the treatment and rehabilitation necessary to recuperate from his recent procedures,” a family source told ESPN.
Ortiz is married to Tiffany Ortiz and has two daughters, Jessica and Alexandra. He also has a son D’Angelo Ortiz. His wife has also made public announcements since the shooting in the Dominican Republic happened and has updated fans and the rest of the public on his health conditions.
Back when the news initially broke that David Ortiz had been shot, baseball fans and supporters were shocked and heartbroken to hear that this could happen to someone like him.
Aside from fans, however, former team players and other well-known celebrities shared their support for the player.
Alex Rodriguez wished him the best, “anxiously waiting for more news. In the meantime, only prayers for David Ortiz, Tiffany and their family.” The news of the shooting even got attention from former U.S. President Barack Obama who wished him a speedy recovery.
Fans on social media are sharing their happiness and support that David Ortiz is officially on his road to recovery and outside of the hospital.
Like fans are seriously freaking out. The outpouring off support is even bigger than the outpouring of grief and concern that came after news broke he had been shot. People are 100% behind Big Papi.
“Be well Papi!,” a woman on Twitter said, emphasizing on what a great guy the retired baseball star is.
Other fans on Twitter sang high praises about what Ortiz has done for his loved ones and his communities in Boston and the Dominican Republic.
“He’s a selfless man that does so much for [his communities],” they wrote. “I wish him well on his path to full recovery.”
Ortiz has started multiple youth baseball academies and has donated funds to create baseball fields in the Dominican Republic and give back to his community.
He’s also been involved in many fundraising efforts in Boston. Ortiz has started the David Ortiz Children’s fun that provides essential support for children in the DR and in New England to those in need.
“Last month, police said a suspected drug trafficker offered to pay $30,000 for the shooting of another man and that Ortiz had been an unintended target,” reports ESPN. Dominican authorities concluded Ortiz was not the target of the attack but instead the shooters meant to kill somebody else–a friend of Ortiz’s, identified as Sixto David Fernandez.
According to Complex, Sixto’s cousin was involved and arrested in late June. But Sixto’s cousin, Victor Gómez, allegedly planned the hit on his cousin but Ortiz was caught in the crossfire instead. Gómez, however, has proclaimed his innocence and he even took to YouTube to say that he would “never do something like this.”
In total, police have arrested 14 people in the case and are still searching for others.
Ortiz, who’s best known for helping the Boston Red Sox win three World Series championships, retired in 2016. To this day, the retired star known as “Big Papi” is still one of the best hitters in the game.
His expected recovery time and the extent of his injuries are reportedly unknown. The Boston Red Sox said on Saturday that there will be an update on his latest condition this following week.
