Afro-Puerto Rican Superhero Miles Morales Gets His Own film In ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’

Sony Pictures recently released a trailer for their upcoming animated film “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.” The film’s main character is Miles Morales, which comic book fans will undoubtedly recognize from the “Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man” series. Morales is part of a different timeline in the Marvel Universe. It’s a separate timeline from the “normal” Peter Parker Spider-Man that most people are used to. In Morales’ storyline, Parker is killed and Morales takes up the spider tights in New York City. In a second series, “Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man,” Parker unexpectedly returns. After defeating some bad guys together, Parker decides to hang up the tights and leave the heroics to Morales.
With a black father and a Puerto Rican mother, Morales’ background is unlike anything most comic book fans have seen in the Marvel Universe and much less in Marvel films. The only Afro-Latino representation we’ve seen in superhero movies are actresses Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Tessa Thompson (“Thor: Ragnarok”), who don’t even get to play Afro-Latina characters. Although “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” doesn’t take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — it is a Sony Animation Pictures film — fans have really appreciated the representation that an Afro-Latino Spider-Man brings to the table. Morales is the first Black character to take on the role of Spider-Man and the second Latino to pick up the web shooters after Miguel O’Hara, the half Mexican scientist who took on the Spider-Man role in the “Spider-Man: 2099” comic series.
For many kids growing up, Spider-Man and comic book superheroes are what children look up to. With the majority of those spots being taken by white men, finding yourself represented in popular media is rare for Latinos and people of color. Not only is a film with Morales a win for representation, it also looks cool as hell. The kid is outfitted with a hoodie and Air Jordan 1s in true NYC fashion. Check the trailer out to see Spider-Man as you’ve never seen him before.
