The New Power Rangers Movie Will Have A Lesbian Character And People Are Here For It

The new Power Rangers movie is hitting theaters March 24 and everyone has been hyped for a long time. The reboot of the franchise has had Latinx fans screaming with Becky G cast as the Yellow Ranger. Now, just one week left before the movie’s release, we have learned a little bit more of Becky G’s character Trini.

Becky G is going to be grace movie screens across the country as the Yellow Ranger this Friday and we just learned something new about her character…

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Dean Israelite shared what he says is a “pivotal” part of the movie. It might be a small piece, admittedly, but it is part of the larger theme in the movie: finding yourself. People assume she’s having boyfriend problems, when in fact, she’s having “girlfriend problems.” According to THR, this is the first time we’ll see an openly gay superhero on the big screen. This is huge!

Director Dean Israelite let the world know that Trini (the Yellow Ranger) will have her own identity crisis like all the other characters.

According to Israelite’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter, all of the Power Rangers have to come to terms with who they are and own every part of themselves.

Trini has her own crisis that leads her to question one important part of her identity: her sexual orientation.

“For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is,” director Dean Israelite told The Hollywood Reporter about that “pivotal” moment. “She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

People are hyped.

One Twitter user is happy to see Power Rangers one-up Disney with their LGBTQ representation.

It has convinced people to go out and see the movie.

Seriously, so many people are hyped about the inclusiveness of the new Power Rangers cast. Not only is Trini now a lesbian, she is Latina. The Blue Ranger is autistic and more than half of the leads are people of color.

Looks like Power Rangers might have a great opening weekend.

That is if tweets turn into legit moviegoers.
