This ‘Roma’ Actor Has Been Denied A Visa For The Third Time And Might Miss The Oscars

‘Roma’ may have the opportunity to take home 10 Academy Awards at this year’s Oscars, but one of its stars might miss the awards show because of visa issues. Actor Jorge Antonio Guerrero, who plays martial arts aficionado Fermín in the Alfonso Cuarón-directed film, has been denied a visa to enter the U.S. for the third time. He is worried he will not receive a visa in time for the Academy Awards ceremony on February 24.

Jorge Antonio Guerrero is one of the stars of the most talked about movie “Roma” but his chance of attending the Academy Awards is growing dim.

Guerrero told the Mexican entertainment and fashion magazine Quién that he was first denied a visa at the start of last year, when he tried applying strictly for a tourist visa since news of the film had not yet come out. Once the film started making the rounds at film festivals, Netflix producers wrote letters to immigration officials trying to help his case.

Netflix producers tried letting officials know he was an invited guest to galas and festivals but his visa was denied a second and third time.

“I took a letter they did not want to read. In my second attempt, they said I was going to work, and I said no, I was going as a guest. And this last attempt was a bit memorable, it seemed that the woman interviewing me was annoyed,” he told the magazine in an interview.

Guerrero is still hopeful he can get his visa in time to see the 91st Academy Awards in Los Angeles in person with his costars.

“It’s an application I have to do and it has been denied by the interviewers that I have had,” Guerrero continued in the interview about the process. “That’s what I have to think, because if we can find a way for a consulate official or someone in the embassy to read these invitation letters, the type of artistic figure I have would be understood, and the cultural interchange that both nations are benefitting from.”

“I am super happy. Hopefully, hopefully, and I say it with all my heart, that Yalitza takes home the Oscar,” Guerrero told Quién.

Guerrero and the “Roma” team are hopeful that he can still get his visa in time to attend the Academy Awards and get the recognition he deserves for his work in the film.
