Puerto Rico Is Still Suffering From Hurricane Maria So La Boriqueña Is Raising Money To Help The Effort

We all know 2017 was the year of Wonder Woman. There’s no doubt that 2018 is definitely shaping up to be the year of Black Panther. Yet, Puerto Rican comic book heroine La Boriqueña is teaming up with some comic book friends to make 2018 Puerto Rico’s year.

She’s helping to save her beloved island after Hurricane Maria along with Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman and other DC Comics heroes.

The New York Times reports graphic designer Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, the man behind La Boriqueña, is publishing an anthology called “Ricanstruction: Reminiscing and Rebuilding Puerto Rico.” The porject is being done through the artist collective Somos Arte. All profits from the book will go towards hurricane relief efforts.

The cover features Wonder Woman and La Boriqueña getting ready to clean things up.

Stories in the anthology will be written by artists and contributors including Rosario Dawson, Rubén Blades, Javier Muñoz, and Sonia Manzano. The history of Puerto Rico will also be explored in the book through a number of original stories.

People on social media are looking forward to the book’s release because #RepresentationMatters.

La Boriqueña has become a growing face in the Puerto Rican community. Comic books of the Puerto Rican heroine have been used to benefit Puerto Rican causes since her release in 2016.

La Boriqueña has been a symbol of Puerto Rican pride over the last few years, even appearing in parades.

Although La Boriqueña hasn’t been the first Puerto Rican superhero, readers are excited an Afro-Latina is helping Puerto Rico solve its problems, from the financial debt crisis to relief aide after Hurricane Maria’s destruction.

La Boriqueña’s popularity only seems to be growing as the release date of this anthology gets closer.

“Ricanstruction” will be released on May 23, with preordering already getting underway online.
