Here’s What Fans On Social Media Have To Say About The Controversial ‘El Secreto De Selena’

Last night, Telemundo premiered the first installment of the series “El Secreto de Selena,” and we’re still reeling from the drama. The Spanish series is based on the novel by noted journalist María Celeste Arrarás which explores the months leading up to Selena’s death and the aftermath, including the trial of her killer, Yolanda Saldívar.

The Quintanilla family has been against Arrarás book since before it was published in 1997, just two years after Selena’s death. Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, has long disputed the accounts in the book, calling Arrarás full of crap and saying it was full of lies. Arrarás, however, said the story is like most investigative novels. She said the book is not solely based on her infamous interview with Saldívar, but also hundreds of court documents, interviews with those on the murder trial jury, and people that were in the mix of Selena’s life during that time. Needless to say, this series has been long anticipated because everyone wants to know, what was Selena’s secret and what motivated Saldívar to murder her.

The 13-episode series, which first premiered last year in Mexico, has had an onslaught of controversy mainly because it exposes the late Tejano singer in a way we’ve never seen her portrayed before. This series is not about her career, about her childhood, or how she became a star. This Selena story is about why she was murdered and is shown in a True Crime fashion. The Quintanillas maintain a stronghold on her image in the public, which means this portrayal goes against whatever they are trying to protect or allege is not true.

The first impression is everything, and there’s definitely mixed reactions to this version.

Some Twitter users didn’t like how actress Maya Zapata portrayed Selena in the concert scene.

Still, hardcore Selena facts are learning things they didn’t know before. Some facts on Saldivar are new to many.
