Jimmy Fallon Talks To Benicio Del Toro About Going To Puerto Rico To Help His Dad After The Hurricane

Benicio Del Toro, the Oscar-winning actor from Puerto Rico, has played some of the most nebulous characters in film history. With that smoldering look in his eyes, it’s no wonder he’s played everyone from the narco traficante Pablo Escobar in the film “Escobar: Paradise Lost,” to the mumble-mouthed criminal Fred Fenster in “The Usual Suspects,” and more recently The Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Del Toro has played characters that have given audiences equal parts delight and the creeps.

In the recently released “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Del Toro plays DJ, a slimey “slicer” who is essentially a space hacker and code-breaker willing to do anything for the right price. You can see the ooze gushing out of his smile as he makes a deal with the good guys to help them out only if they pay him handsomely.

Del Toro also spoke with Jimmy Fallon about the work he’s doing for Puerto Rico in the wake of hurricane Maria with UniodsPorPuertoRico.com. The island is still recovering and will be for the foreseeable future, and his father and many relatives still live there. He was in Puerto Rico just seven days after the massive hurricane that ripped through it, leaving 3.4 million people in the dark.

Before they wrapped up, Fallon played footage from one of Del Toro’s first acting gigs: an extra in Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” music video. The pair capped off their time together with a Puerto Rican holiday favorite – a chilled serving of coquito. Del Toro didn’t seem so scary with a stick of cinnamon poking out of his milky-sweet drink. If we could only get actual bad guys, like Del Toro’s characters to sit down and enjoy a nice glass of coquito, maybe the world would be a much more chill place. Salud!
