Here’s All Of The Drama Going Down With Becky G And Selena Gomez
Here’s what we’re NOT going to do: pit Latina artists and other strong mujeres against each other. Got it? It’s enough that we have society telling us what to wear, how to act, what to say, and what to do–we don’t need people who are meant to support us to also have their unwanted two cents about our lives or things we do.
In case you missed it, the 22-year-old singer took to Twitter to put trolls in their place after a video in which Becky G reacts to “Taki Taki”–a song featuring Selena Gomez–went semi-viral after people thought she was “throwing shade.”
Trolls on social media platforms were quick to read the situation wrong, take the video out of context, and accuse Becky G of dragging the 27-year-old pop singer Selena Gomez.
On July 24, Seventeen magazine published a video on their YouTube channel of Becky G testing her Spanglish playing their Latinx Legends lyric challenge. In the video, the beautiful singer and actress Becky G was tasked with guessing lyrics to songs from artists including, Shakira (“Hips Don’t Lie”), Bad Bunny (“Mia” featuring Drake), Daddy Yankee (“Con Calma” featuring Snow), and Ozuna, Cardi B, and Selena’s “Taki Taki.”
Becky G’s response to that last one was what got trolls acting up.
If you remember correctly, Selena Gomez’s verse on “Taki Taki” goes a little like, “We keep moving ‘til the sun come up. Porque I am the party, yo soy fiesta. Blow out your candles, have a siesta. You can try pero no one can stop me.”
During this part of the Latinx Legends lyric challenge, the Inglewood native doesn’t sing along to the lyrics and instead says, “I’ll never forget this one because when I heard it, I was a little confused ‘cause it says something… blow out the candles, have a siesta …but I don’t wanna’ have a siesta in the middle of a fiesta. If I’m a party, I wouldn’t want to take a nap, you know what I’m saying?” But uh, that’s pretty relatable, no?
One Twitter troll went beyond calling out Becky G for allegedly “throwing shade” at Gomez and also insulted the singer in the process, saying her discography was “one of the worst of a Latin woman.”
Becky G wasn’t having it though–and rightfully so.
“You can love your favorite artists but it doesn’t mean you have to go out of your way to speak badly about others,” Becky G responded to the user. She went on to add that this behavior made her a lot more confused than about Selena Gomez’s “siesta during the fiesta line.” We feel ya, Becky.
Other fans on Twitter also replied to Becky G’s response to the troll and defended her.
“The amount and effort they put on putting women against each other should be used to support them,” one Twitter user said. SAY THAT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK.
Becky G shared the same sentiment adding her two cents about the problem with “stan culture.”
“The industry breaks us apart and pits us against each other enough, sad that ‘stans’ have to do it too. Someone will always have something to say I guess.”
In short, fans took one clip out of context from the Seventeen magazine video in order to pit two successful and independent female artists against each other and that’s not okay.
Becky G, however, was graceful and swift in replying to the troll for spreading negativity and straight-up lies. “I have always loved & supported a true queen like Sel,” she wrote in another tweet. “To cut a snippet out of a video & take it completely out of context is what is so wrong about this “Stan” culture. Sad to see yet another “fan” going against what their favorite artist believes in by putting other females down.”
Most importantly, as Becky pointed out, in today’s age we only need to be serving facts.
“You got your facts wrong. I’m a Gomez myself, we don’t do that here.”
The trolls tried it. But Becky G wasn’t here for it.
We’re glad Becky G stood up for not only herself but also fellow Latina artist, Selena Gomez. It’s unfair for trolls to take things out of context and create drama out of thin air. Keep that same energy for something more constructive.
Continue supporting successful women and if you have nothing nice to say then calladito te ves mas bonito.
