20 Movies And Shows Directed And Produced By Guillermo del Toro That You Have To See

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro has gained growing acclaim for his films over the years. While this past year, “Shape of Water” gained critical acclaim, true fans of the director know that his evolution into Academy Award-winning director has been a long one of short films and tv show stunts.

Here’s a look at his top films.

1. Doña Lupe

This 1985 short horror film and is about a house owned by an elderly woman in financial trouble named Doña Lupe. The older woman rents rooms to policemen Bienvenido and Chato and after the two smuggle suspicious materials into her house, she begins to take revenge. 

2. Geometría

Guillermo del Toro

Del Toro directed this short fantasy horror comedy in 1987. The film is about a Mexican widow who receives a letter from her son’s high school telling her that he is failing geometry. After being yelled at by his mom, the son vows to never fail geometry again by using black magic.

3. Cronos

Prime Films S.L.

This 1993 horror drama stars Argentinean actor Federico Luppi an alchemist in Veracruz who has developed a mechanism that could give people eternal life. Del Toro directs this film that was selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards.

4. Mimic

Guillermo del Toro

This American science fiction horror film was co-written and directed by del Toro. It is based on the short story by Donald A. Wollheim.

5. The Devil’s Backbone

Also known as “El espinazo del diablo” and was directed and written by del Torro. The horror film is about a man and woman who operate a small orphanage in a remote part of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. 

6. Blade II

New Line Cinema

This 2002 American superhero film stars Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson and was massive box office success that grossed over $155 million. The film follows a human-vampire hybrid named blade as he continues his effort to protect humans from vampires. 

7. Hellboy

Columbia Pictures

This 2004 American superhero film directed by del Toro is loosely based on the Dark Horse Comics and is about a demonic beast who becomes a superhero named Hellboy. 

8. Pan’s Labyrinth

Warner Bros.

This dark fantasy drama has a narrative that intertwines this real world with a mythical world centered on an overgrown abandoned labyrinth. 

9. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Columbia Pictures

This 2008 American superhero film is the seuqal the 2004 film. It stars Ron Perlman as the eponymous character who faces his biggest battle with an underworld prince who plans to reclaim Earth for his people.

10. Pacific Rim

Warner Bros. Pictures

This 2013 American science fiction action film directed by del Toro stars Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. The movie is set in the future during a time in which  Earth is at war with colossal sea monsters which have risen from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

11. Crimson Peak

Universal Pictures

The 2015 American gothic romance film directed, co-produced and co-written by del Toro stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Jim Beaver. The movie is about a woman who marries a seductive man who sweeps her away to a gothic mansion. 

12. The Shape of Water

Fox Searchlight Pictures

The 2017 Oscar-winning film is del Toro’s most recent film. It stars Sally Hawkins as a mute woman who falls for a classified mysterious scaled creature from South America.

13. The Orphanage

Universal Pictures

This 2007 Spanish horror film centers around a woman who returns to her childhood home which is an orphanage. She has plans to turn the home into a place for disabled children but has her plans are soon thwarted. 

14. While She Was Out

This 2008 movie was produced by del Torror and is about an abused woman who turns the tables on men who are on a mission to beat and rape her. 

15. Splice

This 2002 film produced by del Toro follows geneticists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) who specialize in creating hybrids of species. When they propose to introduce human DNA and are rejected they decide to do so in secret.  

16. Puss in Boots

This spin-off of Shrek stars Antonio Banderas as a sword yielding cat out to clear his good name 

17. The Captured Bird

Del Toro produces this film about a girl who follows a trail of dark liquid into a building and from there sees the birth of five creatures that pose a threat to the world.

18. Rise of the Guardians

Paramount Pictures

Del Toro produced this film about a guardians like Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy who protect the world’s children from darkness and despair.

19. Mama

This 2013 film about two young girls abandoned in a forest cabin. They’re taken care of by an unknown entity that they fondly call “Mama” which follows them to their new suburban home.

20. The Simpsons

The director took on The Simpsons in the episode “Treehouse of Horror XXIV.” In season 25 episode 2 the director tells the story of how Homer wreaks havoc in Springfield.
