Pigs Everywhere Are Celebrating The News That Two Pigs Were Pardoned By Miami Mayor For Noche Buena

Americans have weird traditions. There’s too many to list, but one of the most bizarre traditions of them all has to be the annual pardoning of the turkey. Each year in front of the White House lawn a couple of turkeys are seen running around like crazy chickens. We’re not sure where this tradition came from but the President of the United States “pardons” a couple of turkeys and basically saves them from being slaughtered and eaten on Thanksgiving. Why? Who the hell knows, but some people find it cute. So, as with most white-cultured customs in this country, we Latinos feel incline to take these traditions up a notch and make them our own. 

In response to the annual turkey pardoning on Thanksgiving, the mayor of Miami-Dade County is celebrating for the second year the pardoning of a pig before Noche Buena.

In a public ceremony, the Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez chose two little piggies to pardon in celebration of the upcoming Noche Buena/Christmas Eve. The mayor tweeted, “New tradition in #OurCounty. Just like the President pardons turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving, as Mayor, I have pardoned two pigs ahead of Christmas. Thanks to the folks at Latin Cafe 2000 on Brickell Plaza for putting together such a fun event! #PigPardon.” Essentially the event is putting the spotlight on the Latino traditions for the holidays, but this year the county is taking the event even further by bringing awareness to the delightfulness of vegan cuisine. 

The Aguacate Sanctuary of Love, a wellness sanctuary, was chosen as the establishment that now has the honor of taking care of the two pardoned pigs.

The Aguacate Sanctuary of Love, which is also a vegan juice bar and store, rescued the two piglets named Petra and Peppa from a local slaughterhouse. Now that the mayor has officially pardoned them, they will be saved from what could have been their ultimate doom: death. Can we say the same thing about those turkeys that President Donald Trump pardoned? Probably not. 

Daney Cabrera of The Aguacate Sanctuary of Love told the Miami Herald that they already take care of rabbits, roosters, hens and other pigs on their property. 

“We want to show that we can co-exist with animals and thrive on a plant-based diet,” Cabrera told the newspaper. The company also encouraged people to not eat pork for Christmas Eve, which will be kind of impossible for Latinos. One of the most popular meals that Latinos like to indulge in on Christmas Eve is lechón, a/k/a roasted pig, and ham. 

The Aguacate Sanctuary of Love posted on their Instagram, “Thank you, @mayorgimenez and @latincafe2000 for this amazing opportunity. Bringing awareness to our community by pardoning two pigs’ lives. Please keep our piggies off your plate this Noche Buena and always. Much love.”

We must admit, this new tradition by the mayor is such a sweet gesture. But while we think this is a cute new tradition, we hardly think people will stop eating pig. Yes, there are so many reasons that people should go vegan, including that it’s better for our health and the environment. But let’s try to be sports about it, right?
