Puerto Ricans Bring The Receipts As They List Priorities For The Island Under A Biden Presidency

For years, the island of Puerto Rico has been neglected or outright ignored by the federal government. Following a series of natural disasters (earthquakes and hurricanes), Puerto Rico struggled to get the attention and resources it so desperately needed from federal officials on the mainland.

Now, with a new president set to take office in January, progressive leaders from the island are working hard to make sure they have President-Elect Joe Biden’s attention.

Progressive leaders sent a letter to Joe Biden detailing their priorities for Puerto Rico.

More than thirty progressive organizations have signed a letter calling for the Biden-Harris administration to establish clear priorities for Puerto Rico. Officials on the island are hopeful that after decades of neglect, the island has a real chance at achieving genuine change under a Democratic president and, hopefully, a Democratic-controlled Congress.

The letter sent to President-Elect Biden includes several policy initiatives for the island – including a full repeal of PROMESA and debt cancellation, the promotion of a just recovery for Puerto Rico, and immediately initiating a process of decolonization and self-determination.

The letter asks the Biden administration to support the U.S. Territorial Relief Act of 2019, which provide much-needed debt relief for the island, while also ensuring a proper audit of the causes and sources of Puerto Rico’s debt.

In ensuring a just recovery for the island, the letters asks that all emergency relief bunds (from HUD and FEMA) be immediately released so that infrastructure, agricultural, educational, and economic projects get the critical assistance they need to help rebuild the island.

And, perhaps most importantly, the letter requests that the Biden-Harris government support the AOC-sponsored Puerto Rico Self-Determination Act of 2020. The bill recognizes Puerto Rico’s legal right to establish its own constitutional convention to determine the island’s future relationship with the United States.

The letter was released the same day that other progressive organizations headed to Delaware to get the president-elect’s attention.

Although the community was successful at electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the offices of president and vice-president respectively, there remains so much work to be done.

We must hold the future administration accountable to promises made during the campaign and that work starts now. Many progressive organizations are already on the ground in Delaware (Joe Biden’s home state) working to ensure that he works to protect immigrant communities, Black lives, worker’s rights, and the rule of law.

Puerto Rico has long suffered under mismanagement and neglect.

From Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017, which absolutely devastated large swathes of the island, to the ensuring political crisis and recurring earthquakes of 2019 and 2020, Puerto Rico has suffered for years.

Even within the island’s own elected government, a crisis of mismanagement has plagued Puerto Rico. Following the initial recovery, scandal after scandal was uncovered which forced the island to go through a series of governors after each was forced to resign. Puerto Ricans took to the streets in record numbers, demanding change from their elected officials and help from the mainland.

Despite pleas from Puerto Ricans across the country, the federal government has been slow to help the island. Federal dollars have often been tied to painful austerity measures that would only further hurt the island’s economy and community.

Now is the time for real change. And Puerto Ricans – both on the mainland and the island – are hoping that a Biden-Harris administration will finally be able to deliver the much-needed relief the community so desperately needs

Latino Twitter Gifted The World With These Seriously Good Inauguration Memes

Google/NBC

It’s official: the United States has a new president! Yesterday was Inauguration Day in the U.S. and we welcomed Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris as the 49th Vice President.

It was an historic day full of major milestones for the country and the world – and that was made obvious by the sheer amount of attention paid to the day’s events. One has to look no further than the amount of memes that were produced in the wake of the inauguration, from Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga to Bernie Sanders and the adiós to Donald and Melania Trump.

As usual, Latino Twitter showed up with the memes and left many of us on the floor laughing our a** off. These are some of the honorable mentions from a day full of historical moments and incredible memes.

Tío Bernie may have stolen the spotlight from President Biden with his very practical inauguration attire.

The long-serving Vermont senator was there to watch proceedings, bracing the D.C. cold to witness Biden being sworn in as president. To withstand the cold climes, Sanders came prepared in a big old reliable coat and mittens – with his inaugural look and general demeanour waiting for the event to begin capturing the creativity of the internet through a series of ‘Cold Bernie’ memes.

Bernie was everywhere!

The former presidential candidate was popping up in all sorts of places as the Internet memed him into a frenzy.

And he was all of us…

The former aspiring presidential candidate later addressed the attention his outfit was getting in an interview with Gayle King, noting: ‘You know in Vermont we know something about the cold and are not so concerned about good fashion, we want to keep warm and that’s what I did today.’

The Internet has even created a website where you can insert Tío Bernie into any scene you want with Google Maps.

And yes, it actually works!

Michelle Obama told us all how she felt without telling us all how she felt.

When Michelle and Barack Obama departed the White House in 2017 to make way for Donald and Melania Trump to take over the reigns, Michelle did not hide how difficult and upsetting she found the moment. So a lot of people were thrilled to see the Michelle we know and love, happy, thrilled and generally paving the way at the 2021 inauguration ceremony.

Lady Gaga giving the world Hunger Games vibes…

Lady Gaga had the honour of performing the American national anthem, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and, of course, she ‘killed’ it. The dramatic and rousing performance was made even better by her custom-made Schiaparelli gown, adorned in the US colours and complete with patriotic hidden meanings. However some thought they’d seen it – particularly the brooch – before…

Then there were the adiós Trump memes that left Mexican Twitter on fire!

A la verga! Adiós, Señor Trump! 👋

This one is too good!

I. Can’t. Stop. Laughing.

Mexican Facebook was also on fire!

This Twitter user is too right, Mexican Facebook really is undefeated!

And some want to reclaim red hats!

If you could bring back red hats, what would yours say?

President Joe Biden has a lot of work ahead of him and he is hitting the ground running. On his first day in office, President Biden has a series of executive actions he is signing to reverse a lot of the damage created by the Trump administration. Here are some of the things President Biden will do with these actions.

The border wall on the southern border is done, y’all.

President Biden is saving the taxpayers billions of dollars by halting the construction of President Trump’s border wall. The border wall is one of former President Trump’s several unfulfilled promises at the expense of the taxpayers.

Despite his unrelenting campaign, Mexico never paid a dime to the wall. President Biden’s action to halt the border wall is a humanitarian and conservationist move that will save billions of tax dollars. According to estimates, there would be $3.3 billion in unused funds in the projects accounts.

The emotionally devastating Muslim ban will finally come to an end.

Former President Trump famously put an end to travel from predominantly Muslim countries. The order arbitrarily excluded a group of people based on their religion. The order that has kept families apart for years is finally coming to an end thanks to President Biden.

President Biden’s ation will bring families together and safeguards the rights of religious freedom. The ban has kept spouses separated, children apart from parents, and caused real damage. There is more to be done to make up for the stain on American history and the action is the first step.

The Keystone XL Pipeline is toast.

We all remember the terrifying scenes of Native people being brutalized by federal officials under Trump’s command. President Biden will make sure that the permit for the pipeline is revoked and put an end to a project that has been devastating the Native community. Activists have been fighting for years to get this done.

Undocumented people will have to be included in census counts.

President Biden is getting rid of the Trump administration’s terrible policy of ignoring undocumented people in the census. There have been several arguments by officials that the move would work to undermine certain states. The policy would take federal money away from states that did not support the former president and have high undocumented populations.

President Biden is going to preserve DACA.

More than 600,000 people benefit from the Obama-era program. Former President Trump waged a war against DACA and Dreamers for political points. Most Americans support DACA and a pathway to citizenship for DACA beneficiaries. With the new executive action, President Biden will instruct the federal government to restore the program to its fullest.

There is still a lawsuit the Biden administration will have to fight. The lawsuit challenging DACA’s legality was filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

In total, President Biden will sign 17 executive actions that will roll back several issues created by the previous administration.

“Today, hours after taking the oath of office, President-elect Biden will take a historic number of actions to deliver immediate relief for families across America that are struggling in the face of converging crises. He will sign a combination of executive orders, memoranda, directives, and letters to take initial steps to address these crises, including by changing the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing economic relief, tackling climate change, and advancing racial equity,” reads a statement from the Biden-Harris Transition Team. “President-elect Biden will take action — not just to reverse the gravest damages of the Trump administration — but also to start moving our country forward. These actions are bold, begin the work of following through on President-elect Biden’s promises to the American people, and, importantly, fall within the constitutional role for the president.”
