Mexico Is Selling Luxury Cars At A ‘Robin Hood’ Style Car Auction And Helping Fight Corruption
Would you buy a cartel kingpin’s Lamborghini? What about a corrupt politician’s Ferrari?
Well, Mexico’s AMLO is counting on it.
The government has confiscated some 82 luxury cars from corrupt politicians and drug lords and is now auctioning them off in what many are describing as a Robin Hood car sale.
Dozens of luxury cars seized from sticky-fingered politicians and cartels will be put up for sale in a populist anti-corruption crusade being waged by Mexico’s leftist president, AMLO.
The president is trying to send a message in a country where corrupt officials and others often flaunt their wealth with impunity.
Over the years, the government has built up a pretty major haul of confiscated vehicles, including a Lamborghini Murcielago, three Porsches and dozens of armored trucks, and they’re finally selling them. With this auction, the government wants to make it clear that corruption among politicians is a thing of the past.
The government is also sending a clear message to cartel leaders.
The government also has plans to auction off real estate, including mansions and beach villas, and jewels seized in a separate auction.
For his part, AMLO drives a VW Jetta so we can see why he might want to auction off these luxury cars.
The left-leaning president has also given up the presidential bodyguards, his private presidential jet, and 60% of his salary.
While the auction is being held at the former presidential residence, Los Piños.
A month after taking office as president, AMLO decided he would continue living in his personal residence instead of the presidential palace. A few weeks later he announced that he would be opening up Los Piños to the public as a museum and cultural center.
The commission charged with the auction, says that the proceeds from the sales would be invested in poor communities.
The government plans to take the money generated from the auction and put it to help the most vulnerable. They want to see the cars become public parks, libraries, schools, and medical centers.
So if you’ve ever been in the market for a Lambo or Porche, now is the time.
