Kamala Harris Proposes Ambitious $100 Billion Grant Program To Close Racial Gap In Homeownership

Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, a California Senator, has recently proposed a $100 billion federal grant solution to help address the racial wealth gap for Black Americans. The crux of the solution is centered in homeownership. She wants to help pay for down payments and closing costs for families of color that are still affected by redline segregation-era practices. She announced her plan Saturday at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, which aims to lift up Black women.

“That not only lifts up black America, that lifts up all of America,” she told the crowd.

The plan would help at least 4 million families that are living in those areas that were redlined. Redlining is the term used to describe Jim Crow laws that limited black families’ abilities to take out loans to buy homes. Redlining effectively set boundaries on where those families could live, and, generations later, those families continue to suffer.

The plan also includes a crucial policy change that would raise credit scores for many minority families.

Her plan is to change federal policy that would count rent payments and utility bill payments toward credit scores, effectively raising credit scores for POC. The plan would give families of color assistance with buying homes in neighborhoods they had been racially biased from living it by offering grants up to $25,000.

The plan would increase the average wealth of Latino households by $29,000.

It would also increase the average wealth of Black households by about $32,000, according to The New York Times. By aiding with down payments and closing costs, it allows families to buy homes that they could pay off with their existing monthly income, rather than requiring tens of thousands of dollars in savings before ownership.

Of course, Fox News is already screaming their heads off about reverse racism.

Unlike offering home loans that families can’t afford, which caused the 2008 housing crisis, this plan seeks to make true reparations for Black families that were prevented from owning homes due to Jim Crow laws.

Thankfully, folks are clapping back at the #whitesplaining.

Instead of discussing the issue at hand–reparations for redlining–Tucker Carlson and his gang talked about how it would be racist to white people by not including them in the conversation. If white folks were included in the conversation, it would be as perpetrators of racist systemic oppression, but Kamala Harris is focusing on justice for black folks, not punishing white folks.

Some people are generally concerned over “race-baiting” policies.

We see you Pan Dulce. There are over 40 million Black folks in the United States, and several responded to Harris’ tweet with concern that this only helps 10 percent of the population. Of course, the 4 million that would be helped are a diverse group of POC that are descendants of those that were racially segregated. That’s several generations of POC paying rent to a landlord instead of owning a home they could pass onto the next generation, to give them a leg up in the world. When reparations aren’t made, families remain static, instead of progressing.

Just one example of a certified Doctorate in Reverse Racism.

We don’t know what your Ph.D. is in, Mr. Eddie Donovan, but it certainly isn’t in systemic injustice or empathy. Hope you had fun leaving that little winky face at the end of a tone-deaf comment, though. Harris’s plan aims to undo generations of unfair and racist practices that hurt Black and brown communities. The same plans being proposed were once used exclusively for white communities so it is just a way to even the playing field.

Harris is tackling systemic injustice alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in other ways, too.

Just this week, the duo introduced a bill that would reduce recidivism through housing after incarcerated individuals leave the system. America has the highest percentage of our population behind bars than any other country in the world. Many of the laws that place folks in jail started out as Jim Crow laws and have simply evolved to become more insidiously racist.

Regardless of those offended by the proposal, people are coming out in droves to support the effort.

Keep it going, Harris. #BlackWomenMagic

A Univision poll showed that Kamala Harris support by Latinos more than doubled from 6 percent to 22 percent after the debates.

The poll only included 411 Latino voters and showed Kamala Harris in the lead with 22 percent. Castro was behind her with 18 percent, and Biden and Sanders were tied at 16 percent.

Thanks to TikTok, the world is getting to know a bit more about Guillermo Hernandez and his pup, Chiquilina. The pair went viral on TikTok (and across the Internet) for their video outside a California carniceria: the terrier happily wagging its tail as it rides a rocking, coin-operated horse while its owner does a little dance to the backdrop of The Ronettes song, “Be My Baby.”

The video became an instant hit as it made its rounds around the Internet, racking up more than 8 million views and 2 million likes on TikTok alone. Now, Hernandez – the proud pup papi – is speaking out about his new found viral fame and giving us faith in humanity once again.

Guillermo Hernandez and his perrita, Chiquilina, have captured the heart of the Internet in new viral video.

A viral video has caused a sensation on TikTok and other social networks for showing a dog wagging her tail happily while riding a mechanical horse, while her owner watches on proudly.

The video was captured by TikTok user @frenchielife805, who saw the pair by chance when she was waiting in her car for the traffic light to change at a nearby intersection. “I go crazy for animals. I have two dogs that are like my babies,” confessed this mother and proud owner of two French bulldog dogs in an interview with the Santa Maria Times.

The video is truly what we all needed right now: pure amor.

Within hours of being posted online, the video blew up and the world came to know Guillermo Hernandez, 53, and Chiquilina, his 10-year-old Terrier cross dog that he has had since she was a puppy.

“I love her more than my life,” Hernandez told the Santa Maria Times, an emotion that many pet owners can identify with. “She is my doctor, my baby, my therapist,” he added.

A native of Michoacán, Mexico, Hernandez moved to the city of Santa Maria in 1985 and worked throughout the state of California in the construction industry for a long time until he was declared disabled by law and unable to continue performing such intense work. Now, he spends his days biking with his Chiquilina up on his head or hanging out with his friends outside the spot where they went viral.

The pair are well known in the area for their loving relationship.

Consuelo Valle, the owner of the shop where they were filmed, told the Santa Maria Times that “he loves his dog very much, he considers her as his family. She is always riding on his shoulder or being carried in his basket. He buys her popsicles, treats and ice cream. He talks to her and asks her what flavor of lollipop she wants.”

Both the TikToker who filmed their loving relationship and Valle said that the man’s incredible relationship with his dog raised their spirits and encouraged them to take better care of their own pets.

“The way in which he is happy with his dog, teaches us that we can all be happy in many different ways,” remarked Valle. While the TikToker @frenchielife805 said although has no idea why their video became went so viral, what she is sure of is that so far in the pandemic, people are always looking for any reason to smile.

A Long Beach Street Vendor Was Attacked And The Community Is Showing Up To Help Him

GoFundMe

In 2020, we saw several street vendors attacked while trying to make ends meet. As the pandemic drags on and people are desperate, the attacks on street vendors have not abated and a Long Beach street vendor is the latest victim.

Gerardo Iván Olmeda Del Pilar, 22, was working as a street vendor in Long Beach when he was attacked by two people. The vendor, according to LA Taco, was later than usual in setting up after dropping of fellow street vendors on his way.

Del Pilar was at the intersection of Burnett Street and Long Beach Boulevard on Saturday Jan. 16 when it happened. The street vendor was approached by two men who seemed to be regular customers when they attacked.

“Everything was calm, then I want to say four hours passed when two men came towards me and like any other customer they asked me for an order of fruit,” Del Pilar told LA Taco

Del Pilar is not letting this stop him from what he has to do to survive.

Del Pilar has been a street vendor for a while. The man, who is from Veracruz, Mexico, was suckerpunched and attacked. According to LA Taco, Del Pilar was giving the men their order when one punched him in the chin to knock him down. They then both started to attack him until they got his wallet and ran away. The men stole $500 from him.

Del Pilar told the Long Beach Post that there was not much he could do while being attacked. He was left with a swollen face and horrific bumps on his face from the vicious attack.

Two friends have set up GoFundMe accounts to help Del Pilar out.

Both Alex Diaz and Marissa Gomez have set up GoFundMe pages to help the young man. Combined, the two GoFundMe pages have raised more than $10,000 and are still accepting donations to help Del Pilar.

“While he was cutting up their fruit, one man reached into his backpack and took out an object and used it to punch him in the face. They broke his nose and lumped up his face and then dragged and kicked him while he was on the floor,” reads Gomez’s GoFundMe. “This man was an innocent victim just trying to provide for his family. All donations will go to replace this man’s lost income. There is no such thing as a donation too small anything is appreciated.”
