Barbie’s Dream House Is Real And You Can Stay There With Three Friends For Just $60 A Night

Dreaming of being a Barbie girl in a Barbie world? Well, now is your chance to make that dream come true.

Thanks to a partnership between Mattel and Airbnb, they’re making Barbie’s iconic Malibu Dream House available to a guest and up to three friends. The house overlooks the Pacific Ocean and brings the spirit of the toy Dream House to life, with a plethora of pink decor and odes to Barbie’s history throughout the house.

Guests will have full access to the Malibu, California, house for the duration of their stay, and it comes with plenty of amenities, according to an Airbnb press release.

Through booking site Airbnb, travelers can make their childhood fantasy — a stay at a full-sized Malibu Dreamhouse-themed mansion on the coast of southern California — come to life.

In celebration of the iconic brand’s 60th anniversary, the glamorous Barbie Dreamhouse Airbnb Experience boasts amenities such as an infinity pool with a water slide, an open-air meditation room, a small movie theater, third-floor basketball court and panoramic views of the Pacific.

With Barbie’s aesthetic in mind, the decor is chic, modern and, naturally, awash in pink.

All of this is possible because Barbie is celebrating her 60th birthday!

Barbie’s Malibu Dream House will be available on Airbnb for a two-night stay in honor of the doll’s 60th anniversary. Airbnb is partnering with Mattel to make the Dream House a reality for Barbie fans.

In honor of Barbie, Airbnb will also make a donation to the Barbie Dream Gap Project GoFundMe initiative, which aims to encourage young girls to pursue any career path they choose and increase the representation of women in all fields.

The house can sleep four guests, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The larger bedroom features a pink accent wall and a walk-in closet.

Though Airbnb makes it clear that if you’ll be visiting with more than one other guest, you’ll have to share a bed. I mean I’m in Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. I think I can manage that.

Barbie’s Malibu Dream House also has an infinity pool and a water slide. And a meditation space, because being Barbie can be stressful.

And yes, even the closets are decked out in all things Barbie.

The walk-in closet comes with clothes from Barbie’s many careers over the years. No word on whether or not you’ll be able to have your own Barbie fashion photo shoot or if they’re just there for decor but fashion lovers rejoice.

But your Barbie Dream House experience comes with a whole mix of other Barbie-centric activities.

Lucky guests will also have the opportunity to take part in just the sort of culturally enriching hobbies Barbie enjoys, led by other impressive women like herself: Fencing pro Ibtihaj Muhammad will be on-hand for private lessons; Jill Meyers, an aerospace engineer, is offering in-depth tours of the Columbia Memorial Space Center; and local chef Gina Clarke-Helm can teach you how to cook with California’s farm-to-table fare.

But it’s all temporary. After the birthday celebration, the house will then return to its regular Airbnb listing (without the Barbie décor). So get your booking on!

You Can Live Your ‘Fresh Prince’ Fantasy With An Airbnb Stay At The Actual Bel Air Mansion

If you ever daydreamed about telling a cabbie, “Yo homes, to Bel-Air!” then your chance is finally here. Will Smith and Airbnb have teamed up to offer the actual Bel Air mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Once again, the vacation rental site has graced us with an Airbnb stay fit for the 90s kid in all of us. It wasn’t long ago that Airbnb offered up a stay at Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. There’s also a Hello Kitty apartment in Japan and the actual house from the series Twilight.

Of course, we should all still be doing our part to minimize the risk of Coronavirus and that’s why this Airbnb stay is only available to residents of Los Angeles county. But if you’re like me, all this time cooped up at home, under quarantine, following social distancing guidelines probably has you longing for some excuse – any excuse –  to leave the house. Well, now here’s the perfect excuse.

Will Smith and Airbnb team up to rent out the mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Yes, it’s true! Although it’s been 30 years since the show first hit the airwaves, the Bel Air mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is still a very real place – and it’s soon available to rent on Airbnb.

Starting on September 29, Airbnb will give you the chance to book a stay at the home in groups of up to two. The five available dates, which only cost $30 in honor of the show’s 30th anniversary, are October 2, 5, 8, 11, and 14.

And since they’ve partnered up with the ‘Fresh Prince’ himself, guests will have access to the wing of the house where Smith’s character called home, as well as to a poolside lounge area and dining room. Other perks include access to Will’s wardrobe and a virtual welcome by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The only disclaimer: because of Covid-19, those lucky guests must prove residency in LA County and be able to prove they’re from the same household. Airbnb also states that the rental will be compliant with CDC rules and follow the enhanced cleaning protocol made by Airbnb as well.

These accommodations look hella fresh and are definitely Will Smith approved.

Although Airbnb states that guests will have access to the wing of the property where Will Smith crashed, you obviously won’t be locked in the bedroom for the entire stay.

Here’s how Airbnb describes your once-in-a-lifetime stay: “It’s your crib for the night, so feel free to act like you own the place. My wing of the mansion includes my bedroom (great for naps), a full bathroom (great for spitting bars in the shower), pool area (great for dips), an outdoor lounge, and the dining room (great for eating obviously). And you gotta do it like my guy DJ Jazzy Jeff so don’t forget your sunglasses!”

Oh, and the best part: Will Smith is the host.

The mansion from every 90s kids dreams is still as fly as it ever was. Bold graffiti art, posh interiors, timeless family portraits, and Philly cheesesteaks served on silver platters will give visitors the full 90s glam experience. The listing adds that guests will be able to enjoy the following:

  • Lacing up a fresh pair of Air Jordans before shooting some b-ball in the bedroom. 
  • Spinning throwback classics all night on turntables just like DJ Jazzy Jeff’s. 
  • Donning a fly look from Will’s closet, from argyle prepster to all-star athlete and Bel-Air Athletics gear. 
  • Soaking up the sun poolside on luxe lounge chairs.
  • Being (virtually) welcomed to the mansion by none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Those looking to book a night at the Banks home should note that the house rules follow local COVID-19 guidelines and rules. Airbnb also said visitors can also rest assured knowing that the king-size bed will be cleaned in protocol in accordance with CDC rules and consistent with the company’s enhanced cleaning measures.

This is not the first time Airbnb has offered the chance to stay in homes that take me back to my days as a kid. In 2019 you could stay at the Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse for just $60 a night, and later this month, residents in Deschutes County, Oregon, have the chance to spend the night at the last remaining Blockbuster video store.

Barbie Is Doing Día De Muertos Once Again In 2020 And Twitter Has Something To Say About It

Mexico’s famed Día de Muertos celebrations are coming up, the time of year when families honor their dead relatives with ofrendas, parades, visits to cemeteries, and many other festivities.

And, of course, Barbie wasn’t going to miss out on the celebrations.

Mattel – which makes Barbie – has just launched a new Barbie Catrina that is much more festive and colorful than the first one last year, who was dressed in black.

On this occasion, Mattel worked with Mexican-American designer Javier Meabe who wanted to reflect the joy and deep-rooted traditions of the country.

“As a Mexican-American designer, it was important for me to use my creative voice to design a doll that celebrates the bright colors and vivid textures of my culture, as well as the traditions I grew up with that are represented and celebrated in Barbie,” Meaba said in a statement from Mattel. 

Although, Mattel has enlisted the designs of a Mexican-American designer, not everyone is pleased with the launch. Some are worried that the entire Día de Muertos collection is potentially watering down a 3,000-year-old tradition and are accusing Barbie of cultural appropriation.

Barbie is releasing its second Día de Muertos doll and it’s generating plenty of buzz.

For the second year in a row, Mattel is launching a Día de Muertos Barbie modeled after the traditions of Mexico’s famed celebrations.

“We often look at different ways to continue to engage girls and families to gain knowledge and celebrate other cultures and other parts of the world,” Michelle Chidoni, a spokeswoman for the company, said. “Our hope is for this Día de Muertos Barbie to honor the holiday for the millions that celebrate and to introduce people not familiar with the tradition to the rich meaning.”

This year’s doll was designed by Mexican American designer Javier Meabe who was inspired by his personal background and family traditions.

“It was very important that the second Dia De Muertos doll felt just as special as the first in the Barbie series,” said Meabe in a statement. “As a Mexican American Designer, it was important to me to use my creative voice to design a doll that celebrates the bright colors and vivid textures of my culture, as well, as have the traditions I grew up with represented and celebrated in Barbie.”

He continued, “For this doll, I was inspired by the color gold seen throughout Mexican culture, jewelry, buildings, statues and artwork and highlighted it throughout the design. The roses represent emotions and moments in life including celebrations, birth, death, passion, and love and I also was inspired to introduce new textures and a new dress silhouette.”

Barbie lovers can buy the doll for $75 on the company’s website or at mass retailers such as Amazon, Target and Walmart.

Last year marked the first time Barbie celebrated the iconic Mexican holiday.

Last year, Mattel released the first Barbie doll celebrating the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), and it was a huge hit. The floral dress and headpiece on the doll combined with the traditional calavara makeup design was absolutely stunning, and the same can be said about the 2020 version that just launched.

This time around, the Barbie Dia de Muertos doll features a light, blush-colored lace dress over a layer embroidered with floral and skeleton accents. The intricacy of the makeup has been taken up a notch, and the “golden highlights in her hair shimmer beneath a crown of skeleton hands holding roses and marigolds.”

However, since last year many have been questioning the intentions of Barbie and whether or not this is a good move.

In Mexican culture, the Día de Muertos — or Day of the Dead — is when the gateway between the living and the dead is said to open, a holiday during which the living honor and pay respects to loved ones who have died.

The new Día de Muertos Barbie was intended less as a portal into the realm of the dead and more as a gateway into Mexican culture. At least that is what Mattel is hoping for.

However, not everyone agrees. Latinx Twitter has lit up with both excitement and anger, with some folks appreciating the design while others are calling Mattel out for cultural appropriation. The Día de Muertos doll is another way Latinx culture is slowly entering the mainstream. With acclaimed shows like Vida and One Day at a Time and movies like Coco and Roma winning accolades — it seems even a toy company is looking to capitalize on Latinx culture
