Things That Matter

Planning A Visit To Las Vegas? You Might Want To Think Again As The City Is Infested With Swarms Of Grasshoppers

Well, you know what they say: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. And we hope the swarms of grasshoppers invading Las Vegas don’t cross state lines.

Don’t worry, the swarm of grasshoppers are not a cause for concern nor are they dangerous but it sure looks like our biggest nightmare.

According to entomologists with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the grasshoppers are in the middle of a northern migration, currently sweeping through Southern Nevada. Jeff Knight, an entomologist, said in a news conference on Thursday in Las Vegas, that when they have a wet winter or spring, “these things build up often down below Laughlin and even into Arizona. They’ll move northward, and they’ll often move as far as central Nevada.”

Despite people on social media freaking out about the grasshopper invasion, Knight said they’re not dangerous and aren’t carrying any diseases. Even better news? They don’t bite and won’t cause much damage in a yard.  According to the New York Times, it looks like the grasshoppers descended on Las Vegas last week likely were attracted to the 30-story pyramid Luxor hotel and casino since they’re drawn to ultraviolet light.

While the grasshopper migration is harmless, tourists are also calling it the “Great Grasshopper Invasion of 2019.”

“It was crazy. We didn’t even want to walk through there. Everybody was going crazy,” Diana Rodriguez told CBS affiliate KLAS about the grasshoppers. “We were wondering like what’s going on.”

I mean, imagine minding your own business walking the streets of Las Vegas and then suddenly being met with thousands of swarming grasshoppers? We’d freak out too.

Locals, on the other hand, are pretty used to this by now since it happens every few years. According to USA Today, the state has records that date as far as the early 1960s of grasshopper invasions.

According to CNN, the Las Vegas grasshopper invasion is so huge that you can see it on the weather radar. CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said that it looked like there were two storms moving into the Las Vegas area. But one of them wasn’t moving as rain normally would. It turns out that the other storm was actually the storm of grasshoppers making their way into the city.

People’s reactions on Twitter in response to the Las Vegas grasshopper invasion are hilarious.

The grasshopper invasion in Las Vegas is giving us “A Bug’s Life” vibes.

It’s reminding people of the evil grasshoppers from the 1998 film. *shudders*

Others have some conspiracy theories… the grasshoppers are a result of Area 51.

“Las Vegas threatens to invade Area 51, so Area 51 releases a million grasshoppers to freak out the city,” the user wrote. Hmmmm, seems legit. What do you think?

However, people were quick to debunk that theory because what will Area 51 release after the grasshoppers finish their migration? Huh?

She makes good points.

And of course, some people had to somehow make it about politics.

Good one, @SteveYeagerNV.

Twitter users also shared hilarious and relatable gifs.This would literally be us.

https://twitter.com/JordanDelgado_1/status/1154284641441869824

The end DOES seem near.

And then things got a little biblical.

“There were many plagues that God sent upon Egypt flies, gnats, frogs and locusts. This is definitely a sign, please repent and seek the Lord Jesus Christ if you haven’t already. It’s no coincidence… Vegas being “sin city” and all,” replied one Twitter user.

But despite Las Vegas being invaded by grasshoppers, users are still focusing on the beauty of it all.

The grasshopper invasion will continue for a couple of weeks at most. And now the grasshoppers are being joined by other pesky insects–stink bugs. According to KTNV Las Vegas, the stink bugs are a huge agricultural pest and if they come in large numbers, they’ll likely destroy crops.

Well, good luck, Las Vegas. We hope these grasshoppers still let y’all live your best lives.

Christina Aguilera Will Release A Spanish-Language Album And OMG I’ve Been Waiting For This Since ‘Mi Reflejo’

@MrNickLocke / Twitter

This month marks 20 years since Christina Aguilera released “Genie in a Bottle,” and the artist is celebrating a new milestone this weekend: “The Xperience” opening show of her Las Vegas residency. It was at her Vegas residency that Aguilera dropped some highly anticipated news that is making fans flip out with excitement.

“Let us not forget,” Christina Aguilera told her fans. “The Latin album is coming.”

@idolator / Twitter

It seems that Xtina is raising a family, enjoying her residency in Vegas and working on a new album… in Spanish.

“I want to do it the right way,” she tells Billboard.

@billboard / Twitter

“I’ve been wanting to do it for years,” she told Billboard. “But I want to do it the right way. I want to work with musicians and beautiful people from the Latin world who just eat, sleep and breathe it, and live it, and learn from them. I want to really experience it from the ground up.”

Fans are already trying to help Xtina out with some references.

@NBCTeamShakira / Twitter

Twitter user @NBCTeamShakira called out Aguilera with a little suggestion, “Hey @xtina… Call @shakira to help you with your Spanish Album. She is a producer, songwriter, and singer. She has 12 Latin GRAMMYs and 3 GRAMMYs. It’s the biggest female name in Latin America, and the fans dream of their collaboration. Powerful women. #XtinaAndShakira”

And a hashtag was born. #XtinaAndShakira

Demi Lovato might have been her No. 1 stan at the show.

@ehadshealth / Twitter

Lovato filmed nearly the entire performance on her Instagram live, including selfie videos of actual tears running down her face. Fans are now wondering if Lovato will be featured in her new album.

In case you forgot, Aguilera released “Mi Reflejo” in 2000 and Latinos had a moment of representation in mainstream pop music wept.

@cammcma / Twitter

Aguilera’s “Mi Reflejo” won the Bet Female Pop Vocal Album Latin Grammy and has been promising a follow-up album for a minute now. Why the hold-up?

Aguilera revealed that she’s starting to take Spanish lessons.

@RARESTXTINA / Twitter

“I always heard my parents speak it in the house, but I never fully learned [Spanish],” she tells Billboard. “I’m even digging in and trying to start the lessons.”

“It’ll take a little time balancing the show and the recording hours, but it’s coming.

@morganhoneyb / Twitter

Fans have heard this before and are jaded by false promises. Others, however, have high expectations.

This fan who experienced #TheXperience first hand predicts a new Latin Queen.

@levolti / Twitter

Unquestionably, J.Lo has sat at the throne for decades now. This is the “Game of Thrones” chisme we deserve.

Other fans are already opening space in their hearts for a Latin tour.

@JeanCDeLuca / Twitter

Latin America has been waiting for a tour for far too long, and @JeanCDeLuca predicts Aguilera will grace the diaspora in 2020.

We’ve moved past asking when the album will drop to begging for the tour.

@SERGIOTHEHUMAN / Twitter

We’re blasting @SergioTheHuman’s request from the rooftops in the hopes that Aguilera will hear her fans. Her Spanish language album success has only marinated into stronger cravings for more content.

Obviously fans wan a headlining performance at the Latin GRAMMYs.

@paige_t / Twitter

The biggest question folks have right now is: who will be on the album? So far, Christina has only alluded to the album being in the making.

Those ride or die fans are already making threats in exchange for live music.

@GottaLoveXtina / Twitter

Cuidado, Xtina! Your Latino stans need you more than you know.

Needless to say, fans are shooketh by the whole Xperience.

@EmanuelGtrz / Twitter

As the summer goes on, who knows what else we’ll learn from Christina’s own mouth. We hope she’ll practice her Spanish with the audience.
