A Florida Teacher Was Arrested For Carrying A Gun To School Months After It Became Legal For Teachers In Florida To Be Armed

Today’s school kids have a different understanding of mass shootings. They are trained on how to handle an active shooter on their campus. Some teachers around the country have also received training on how to shoot the shooter, who will probably be a student. We’ve seen those images of teachers being trained to shoot, and it’s a startling thought.

So when you hear that a teacher is carrying a gun, some perhaps may not think twice, but when you hear that they carried knives too then, it’s actually a problem.

A fourth-grade teacher in Florida was arrested after getting caught with a backpack that was full of guns and knives.

According to media reports, Betty Jo Soto, a 49-year-old Pinellas County school teacher was acting strange, and her colleagues noticed. They said that where she went that morning, she carried around the backpack, so that “suspicious behavior” prompted them to call the police.

“The principal notified law enforcement,” Pinellas school district spokeswoman Lisa Wolf-Chason said, according to The Tampa Bay Times. “And in the course of their investigation, discovered what was in her backpack.”

The school teacher is licensed to carry a gun, but not on campus.

People on campus said that they could see Soto’s gun as it was hanging out of the bag. She was also carrying a “six-inch fighting knife in her pocket and a two-inch finger push knife in her backpack strap.”

As for motive, one possibility could be that the school district did not renew her teaching contract. She is currently on bail awaiting her trail and faces “two misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon.”

“I really want to applaud the staff here at Starkey because they noticed something suspicious and acted on it right away. Which, ultimately helped keep the school safe today,” Wolf-Chason said according to Spectrum 9 News.

Some people on social media are questioning why this teacher was singled out when some teachers have been told to bring a gun to school to protect children.

We shall wait and see when she has her day and court and how she will explain herself.

Some have speculated whether or not the teacher was attempting to make a point about the new bill.

Some have pointed out that if she had left the gun in her desk and locked it she would have been blamed if something had gone awry.

Others were quick to question whether reactions to Soto’s carrying of a gun were because of her race.

Suddenly Florida, the state that loved the idea of arming teachers, has problems. #TBD I guess!

Mexico is under high pressure by the Trump Administration to secure its southern borders and take hold of the migration issue stemming from Central America. Now we are seeing some negative ramifications of that, which is what advocates were concerned would happen.

Mexican officials are investigating a shooting that took place in the state of Veracruz in which a teen migrant was killed while traveling with 17 Salvadorans in a truck headed to the U.S.-Mexico border.

It’s unclear why police opened fire, only that the truck carrying the migrants was at an immigration checkpoint.

According to Reuters, three of them in the truck with the migrants were police. MSN reports that Veracruz Attorney General Jorge Winckler Ortiz said “17 migrants bound for the United States were traveling in a white truck near a checkpoint in the town of Agua Dulce when they heard sirens. The driver of the truck, who officials said was likely a smuggler, sped up. A police patrol car gave chase and eventually reached the truck.”

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he issued 6,000 Mexican agents to secure the southern border, but skeptics aren’t sure the measure will work.

Famed Latino journalist Jorge Ramos wrote an op-ed in the New York Times and said López Obrador’s measure to secure the southern border will ultimately hurt Central Americans that are in danger in their native country. He said those people will flee regardless of the border situation in Mexico. He also said that the president should use their resources to help Mexicans and the violence in the country.

“But the Mexican National Guard should be focusing on fighting crime at home, not on stopping harmless Central Americans from reaching the United States — particularly when 14,000 Mexicans have been murdered since President López Obrador took office last year,” Ramos wrote. “Among those killed was the journalist Norma Sarabia. She was gunned down on June 11 outside her home in the state of Tabasco, the sixth reporter murdered in Mexico this year. Editors’ Picks For Taylor Swift, Is Ego Stronger Than Pride? Mexico City’s Announcement About School Uniforms Makes Headlines Around The World

Mexico City continues to make progressive waves as the city announces that students at public schools will be able to choose the uniform they want to wear.

In an announcement, the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said the capital’s school system would do away with the gender-specific uniform.

“We are announcing something very simple but for us very transcendent. I think the times have passed in which girls have to wear a skirt and boys have to wear pants,” she said. Adding “Boys can wear skirts if they want and girls can wear trousers if they want.”

She added that the measure would create “a condition of equality, of equity”. When Ms. Sheinbaum took office she promised improved rights for women and LGBTQ people.

By midday, #UniformeNeutro (or neutral uniform) was trending in Mexico.

Mexican Twitter had all sorts of thoughts and feelings about the decision but most people celebrated the freedom of choice.

Young boys and girls across the capital will now be able to wear the uniform that they choose. This helps empower a whole new generation.

Girls, in particular, celebrated the decision.

Until now, young girls were required to wear skirts as part of their uniform. This announcement does away with that old-school way of thinking.

Some thought the idea of gender-specific uniforms was stupid from the beginning.

And that the decision would allow kids to wear what they want while also empowering an often mistreated transgender community.

Not everyone in Mexico was embracing the announcement.

Some on Twitter said students shouldn’t be given a choice. That they should wear what they’re told to.

Others were a bit more blunt in their homophobia and transphobia and didn’t want to encourage transgender individuals to feel safe to be themselves.

And to those haters, Twitter was ready with some pretty good clap backs.
