This Texas Family Wears Helmets At Home For The Sweetest Reason
Texas-based writer Shea Serrano (Grantland, The Ringer) recently posted a photo of his cousin’s family hanging out at home. And yes, they’re wearing helmets. While the image might seem like they are getting ready for a family bike ride, the caption paints a different, more touching picture. According to Serrano, the baby of the family wears a head shaping helmet. The helmet, medically known as a cranial orthosis, is used to shape a baby’s head who has plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, or scaphocephaly, according to Cranial Tech. Essentially, the baby is born with a flat or misshapen head and the cranial orthosis is used to mold the head.
Gary Gutierrez, Shea Serrano’s cousin, has the whole family wearing helmets in solidarity with the youngest member of the family.
my cousin's baby wears a head-shaping helmet so he's got the whole family wearing helmets now this is the realest shit i ever seen pic.twitter.com/hrsj4tMA6d

According to ABC News, the Gutierrez family’s baby boy was diagnosed with severe case plagiocephaly and the problem continued to get worse. After seeing a doctor, the San Antonio family was given a helmet that would reshape his head. The baby, named Jonas, has to wear the helmet 23 hours a day for six months, according to CBS News. Serrano snapped a picture of the family as the father was cooking dinner and posted it to Twitter. By the time of this story being written, the tweet had more than 29,000 retweets and more than 116,000 likes.
The tweet got people talking about their own experiences with plagiocephaly and cranial orthosis treatments.

“We’re really grateful that people have been moved by this,” Shayna Gutierrez, Jonas’ mother, told CBS News. “We’re just an average family trying to do our best.”
The tweet and image have really touched people who can relate.
Ok, as someone who grew up having multiple reconstructive surgeries and head shaping, this pic right here? Makes me so damn happy.
